On Aug. 18, Mayor Park met U.S. Consul David John Jea. He thanked him for visiting City Hall and congratulated him on his appointment. He described the Consul's deep connection to Korea and the Mayor's familiarity and wishes for future collaboration with the Consul. Consul Jea responded by expressing his gratitude and plan for playing an active role in exchanges between Busan and the United States.

The Mayor and Consul discussed various projects, including securing the foundation of an advanced city, the city's bid for the 2030 World Expo, the introduction of hyperloop, blockchain and boosting the esports industry's presence in the city. Consul Jea expressed his willingness to cooperate with City Hall.

Polyglot David John Jea can speak Korean, Russian and French and has worked in the Foreign Service since 2003. He is passionate about the environment and plans to utilize this in his work as Consul in Busan. Before serving in Korea, he was the Director for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs in the Bahamas, the Second-Secretary/Vice-Consul in Madagascar and the Deputy Border Coordinator in Pakistan.

Since moving to Korea in 2016, with his wife, a fellow Foreign Service Officer and three children, he served as a Career Development Officer, Trade and Macroeconomic Policy Unit Chief and Political Internal Unit Chief in the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.

The Consul grew up in Florida and is an enthusiastic cyclist. On July 12, he and his colleagues received attention for riding over 500 kilometers from Seoul to Busan. The ride was part of his plan to get to know the southeastern part of Korea better.

Before signing up for the Foreign Service, David John Jea worked for the U.S. State Department as a Regional Program Manager and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Russia. Also, he has received several U.S. Department of State Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards.
