Busan named World Design Capital 2028
source: visitbusanBusan was named the World Design Capital 2028, a title awarded biennially to cities that utilize design as a tool to enhance economic, social, cultural and environmental quality of life.The World Design Organization, which selects the designated cities, recognized and highly valued Busan’s “long-standing commitment to using design as a catalyst for sustainable urban development, cultural enrichment and inclusive innovation.” The WDC 2028 Selection Committee, comprised of five international experts in design, public policy, sustainable development and urban planning, selected Busan over Hangzhou, China. The Selection Committee noted, “Busan’s bid presents a compelling vision of a city using design to redefine its identity and purpose on a global stage. This strategic, inclusive and people-first approach to design is what has been integral to the World Design Capital programme from the start, and we look forward to seeing the designation’s impact come 2028.”Under the theme “Inclusive City, Engaged Design,” Busan presented a citizen-centered service design model with a unique approach that highlights design’s social role and emphasizes citizen participation and community involvement. During the WDO inspectors’ visit, the city showcased practical initiatives aligned with its core design strategy, including projects that encourage citizen engagement and foster an educational system centered around design. The integration of urban policy and design was also noted as one of Busan’s strengths. Key examples include Bongsan Village in Yeongdo, Dongseo University, North Port and F1963, a former factory transformed into a cultural complex.A WDO official remarked, “Busan has strong potential to lead urban transformation through design culture. We believe this designation will spark Busan’s emergence as a city with global influence, extending far beyond Korea.” The official designation will be announced and celebrated in September, at the 34th World Design Congress in London. With this meaningful milestone, Busan City is committed to upholding its title and reputation through continuous efforts. Launched by Busan City and the Busan Tourism Organization, this immersive program offers a creative way to experience Korean cultural heritage by combining temple visits with trekking through surrounding mountains. From September to November, participants can join the program on a date of their choice and enjoy a meaningful experience at Beomeosa Temple, the third-largest temple in Korea.The program is designed as an active, mission-style adventure, offering three trekking routes tailored to different fitness levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. While trekking, participants are encouraged to complete a special mission: Capture nature sounds using directional microphones. Those recordings are later provided to each participant as a personal audio file, preserving their unique experience. The revitalizing trek is followed by a wholesome temple meal, featuring simple yet satisfying vegetarian dishes. All participants will also receive a small souvenir to commemorate their visit.
