This Global Gathering will have 154 culture booths from 25 different countries, and participants will be able to enjoy and experience various different cultures from all over the world. There will be the Global Stage, traditional cultural performances by invited troupes from Busan's sister cities, and an experience zone which allows visitors to try on traditional clothing native to the participating countries, as well as an area to play those countries' traditional games.

The official poster of 18th Busan International Film Festival is revealed. The poster is based on the original work of SHIN Sung Hy, created by the artist’s signature technique called “nouage”. A 3-dimensional space created, by the interweaving of dots, lines and gaps, resonates with the idea of film as a complex media that incorporates diverse genres and art forms. Each intersection of lines resembles numerous encounters between cineastes and the audience within the Festival environment. The 18th Busan International Film Festival poster is considered the “brightest” of all its preceding posters and reflects Busan International Film Festival’s focus on hosting a truly festive event.

Born in 1948 in Ansan, Korea, SHIN Sung Hy is one of the most internationally recognized Korean contemporary artists. SHIN Sung Hy left for Paris in 1980 and was based in Europe for most of his artistic career. He mastered the technique “nouage”, which he began to experiment with in 1996. “Nouage” involves three stages ？ painting color dots and lines on the canvas, tearing what is painted, and tying the remnants back on to the surface. Through this technique the artist is able to recreate a 3-dimensional space on a 2-dimensional plane, stretching the limits of traditional fine arts. Celebrated as one of notable contemporary artists with a singular artistic vision, SHIN Sung Hy was internationally associated with the Baudoin Lebon Gallery (Paris), Leonard Hutton Galleries (New York), Gallery Proarta (Zurich), and Gallery Hyundai (Seoul).

The 18th Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 3 to 12, 2013.

To celebrate Buddha’s birthday on May 17, splendid lotus lanterns will float all across Busan. Lanterns symbolize the celebration of Buddha’s birth, and those for the event will be created in the shape of lotus flowers. This is a chance to get a glimpse of Korea’s deep-rooted Buddhist culture.

In CNN’s 2012 list of the “50 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Korea,” Samgwangsa Temple Lantern Festival was among the selections. The Samgwangsa Temple Lantern Festival will be held from May 5 to 19.  Pictured above is a scene from the previous festival.

Despite continuing economic recession at home and abroad, the monthly cargo volume hit the highest record ever.

Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Ki-tack Lim) stated that the monthly container cargo volume recorded the highest performance in March.

Cargo volume at Busan Port surged 4.2 percent year on year to 1,556,000 TEU in March, and its monthly record is much higher than 1,415,000 TEU in May 2012 which was the previous highest monthly record.

Import-export cargo volume increased 5.3 percent from the previous year to 817,000 TEU, and transshipment cargo increased 3.8 percent to 739,000 TEU.

According to BPA analysis, sluggish import-export cargo and transshipment cargo has increased because of economic recovery of trading partners including the United States and Japan, while European nations still going through a slow recovery.

BPA has actively carried out marketing strategies aimed at global shipping companies, and gained the reputation for being the most enthusiastic port authority in the world. Furthermore, BPA has put forth its best effort to increase cargo volume by holding presentation meetings with consignors, and building networks with local ports in China and Japan.

BPA President Ki-tack Lim stated, “We will try our best to achieve Busan Ports goal of 18 million TEU despite the unstable domestic and international economy.

Visitors to Busan rated the city as an “interesting, dynamic and fun” place to be. Photo shows tourists on Open Top City Tour.

Tourists have rated Busan as “interesting,” “dynamic,” “bustling” and a “fun” place to be. Eight out of 10 tourists said they want to return to the city. The percentage of foreign tourists who had a positive image of Busan before they visited the city was 50.8 percent, while the percentage of tourists who liked the city after they visited was 80.3 percent. The survey showed that tourists liked Busan more when they actually visited the city.

The image that tourists had of Busan after traveling to the city was “interesting,” which came in first with 5.18 points (out of seven). “Bustling” and “dynamic” earned 5.1 points, and “fun” was rated 5.0. Generally, the perception was a positive one, but “expensive” came in at 4.7 points, which showed that prices had gone up somewhat. 

The destination most often visited by foreigners was Haeundae. Foreign tourists visited Haeundae Beach, Gukje (international) Market and Nampo-dong the most. Foreigners also preferred independent travel over package trips and spent an average of three days in the city, mostly shopping.

For transportation, foreigners most frequently used taxis. Local tourists most often visited Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli Beach and Jagalchi Market in that order. However, when it came to the most memorable tourist spot, they answered Haeundae, Gwangalli and Taejongdae.

The Busan Tourism Survey was conducted of 2,300 local tourists and 2,349 foreign tourists from January to December last year.

The Busan-Jeju car ferry resumed operation on April 19th. The operation was halted at the end of May 2012. 

Two car ferries travel from Busan to Jeju on the following schedule

Route: Busan ↔ Jeju
Car Ferries: Seokyung Paradise (began operating April 19) and Seokyung Island (began operating April 23)

Seokyung Paradise (6,626 tons, 613-passenger and 300-car capacity)

Flights to China, Japan, Hong Kong and Malaysia from Busan are increasing in frequency and number.  Air Busan and Korean Air will open new routes to China, and Air Asia X is preparing a new Busan-Kuala Lumpur route to open in July. These airlines are particularly focused on flights that depart from Busan to China and Japan.

Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have increased their international flights from 1,486 per week last year to 1,543 per week this year, which is 57 more flights per week or a 3.8 percent increase.

There has been a sharp increase in regular flights to China and Japan. The two airlines have increased flights to China by 467 times per week and flights to Japan by 440 times per week. Flights to the Americas have increased by 147 times per week, a hike of 8.16 percent.

Korean Air has increased its Incheon-Narita flights from 28 times per week to 35 times per week, while its Busan-Narita flights have increased from seven times per week to 14 times per week.

Korean Air’s new Busan-Nanjing route will start operating on July 1, and flights will run four times per week. Korean Air will discontinue its Busan-Manila flight starting July 16. 

Asiana Airlines will increase its Busan-Beijing flights from four times a week to 11 times, and increase its Busan-Guangzhou fights from two times to four times per week.

Air Busan recently began its Busan-Xian flights on April 3.  It has also increased its Busan-Hong Kong flights from three times a week to five times (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Air Busan, which began its Busan-Hong Kong flights in May 2011, became the first domestic airliner to begin a daily Busan-Macao flight last July. Traveling to Macao and Hong Kong has become quite popular.

Malaysia’s Air Asia X, which began its Busan-Narita route last November, will begin its Busan-Kuala Lumpur flight this coming July. Air Asia X flies diverse routes via Kuala Lumpur, the location of its headquarters, to destinations such as Europe, Australia, India and Southeast Asia. Philippine Airlines also began a Busan-Boracay direct flight on April 11.

A flight to Kalibo, Philippines, which runs once a week, leaves Busan at 8:10 p.m. and arrives at 11:35 p.m. on Thursdays, while flights from Kalibo to Busan leave every Sunday at 2:10 p.m.

Passengers arriving at Kalibo Airport must travel by road for one hour and then take a small boat to get to Boracay.

The Busan International Performing Arts Committee is proud to announce this year’s selections to open and close the 10th Busan International Performing Arts Festival (BIPAF) May 3-12.

Opening the Busan International Performing Arts Festival this year will be the classical string quartet from Spain, Paganini, the most popular musical group to perform at the festival in the BIPAF’s 10-year history.  Paganini brings its fun interpretation of classical music to the stage at the Busan Cultural Center on May 3 and 4.    

Two family-oriented performances of Paganini (8+ rated), are scheduled for 7 pm on May 3 and 6 pm on May 4 at Busan Cultural Center.

This year’s closing performance, Apparition, is a winner of the Argus Angel Award for outstanding artistic achievement at England’s Brighton Festival. Giving us a peek at the future of performance arts, Apparition brings its visually stunning interpretation of dance and digital technology to the Busan Cultural Center stage with two shows at 6 pm on May 11 and 12.  

This year’s BIPAF expands to 46 performances from seven countries in four programs featuring the concept of “Digilog (Digital + Analog)”.  The programs are larger than in previous years: 23 performances from seven countries in three programs. The citizens’ participation programs, “The 10-Minute Open Plays” and “BIPAF ZONE” performances, have been expanded as well.

Busan City announced that the 2013 Korea Sailing Festival will take place from April 22 through May 5 at Yacht Center in Busan, Yeosu New Port in Yeosu City Jeollanam-do, Jisepo Port in Gyeongsangnam-do, and Fukuoka in Japan.

The 2013 Korea Sailing Festival consists of four competitions: the 2013 Southern Coast International Yacht Race (April 22-25), the National Yacht Race for the Disabled (April 26-28), the Busan Super Cup International Yacht Race 2013 (April 27-28) and the 21st Arirang Yacht Race (May 2-5). 1,500 racers in 150 teams from 12 countries are expected to participate. It will be the first and biggest yacht festival in Korea.

The first race of the festival, the 2013 Southern Coast International Yacht Race, is held from April 22-25, co-hosted by Busan Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do.

The Yacht Race is expected to unite the cities in south coastal areas and promote marine tourism in south coastal areas.

The race begins at Yeosu New Port in Yeosu City on April 23 and ends at the Yacht Center in Busan on April 28. The awards for the first race section will be held at Jisepo Port in Geoje City at 6 pm on April 24, and the final awards will take place at Yacht Center in Busan at 6 pm on April 28.

The main event of the festival, the Busan Super Cup International Yacht Race, will take place April 27-28 at the Yacht Center in Haeundae. 800 racers in 100 teams from 15 countries will compete on a 5-km race course around Haeundae and Oryuk-do for 76 million won in prizes.

The National Yacht Race for the Disabled takes place April 26-28 at the Yacht Center. The Race will promote yachting as a marine sport that everyone can enjoy. 

The Arirang Yacht Race takes place every other year during Japan's Golden Week holiday in Busan and Fukuoka alternately. The 21st Arirang Yacht Race is scheduled to be held May 2-5, co-hosted by Busan Yacht Association and Genkai Yacht Club. Korean and Japanese racers will participate in an 11-hour of race from Busan to Fukuoka. 

Busan City established the first Korean yachting school in 1986. The opening of the school was intended to provide the public a chance to learn and enjoy yachting. Busan City has been hosting the Arirang Yacht Race since 1973. It is the oldest international yacht race in Korea. The city will continue to promote the Korea Sailing Festival in an effort to make it a world yacht festival.  

A city official said, “We encourage Busan citizens to come out and enjoy a variety of events at the 2013 Korea Sailing Festival,” and added, “We will continue to promote and improve our programs so citizens can have a chance to experience and enjoy marine sports in Busan.”

20 Art Works to Be Selected Through International Competition

Sea Art Festival 2013 will be open on the Songo Beach from Sept. 14 to Oct. 13 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Songdo beach under the theme of "With Songdo : Remembrance, Marks, People."

The festival is organizing a competition to select 20 outstanding works and 15 invitational works for a total of 35 installations from in and outside of Korea.

Park Tae-won, Planning Chairman of the Busan Fine Arts Association has been named the artistic director of this festival.

All 35 art works and installations will be on display at the festival with 20 of them being selected through an international competition.

From April 15 to May 20, individuals and organizations can apply for the competition with the limit being one entry each. For college students under the tutelage of mentor professors, it is possible to participate in the festival if they maintain the group to 10 students.

The evaluation of entries in the Sea Art Festival 2013 will be in three stages. The first stage will be of the evaluation of documentary application, followed by an analysis of the art works and installations (involving a front view, side view and computer graphics) and must be presented on A3 size paper.

The evaluation for Sea Art Festival 2013 (http://www.busanbiennale.org/english/sub02/01.php) takes place in three stages with the first bring application review, second an analysis of the subject and the final selection.

The final review for the selection of 20 entries involves the actual installation of the entries which involves the evaluation of not only the originality and artistic aspects but how technical and environmental elements which must take nature and surrounding conditions into consideration.

The winner of the grand prize will be awarded 15 million won along with a certificate of merit. One outstanding entry will receive 10 million won and the remaining 18 consolation installations will be presented with 5 million won.

Sea Art Festival 2013 in the Songdo Beach in Busan runs for 30 days from Sept. 14 to Oct. 13.

There has been a surge in real estate purchases by foreigners in Marine City, which overlooks Haeundae. Pictured above is a night view of Marine City, Korea’s premier skyscraper town.

The “Buy Busan” wave for foreigners is heating up. Foreign investment in Busan has reached a pinnacle, and there has also been an increasing number of real estate purchases by foreigners in Marine City, which overlooks Haeundae.

Despite the economic slowdown,  Busan achieved a high level of foreign direct investment (FDI) at $480 million last year. In 2011, FDI was $359 million, and in 2010, it was $253 million. This is an increase of $121 million and $227 million, respectively.

The highest FDI to date since the 1997 IMF crisis was $490 million in 2000.  However, that was a time when foreign investment regulations were more lenient than they are now. Hence, last year’s achievement can be viewed as the highest to date. 

Among the industries where foreign investment occurred are manufacturing (20 percent) and other services (80 percent).  Fifty percent came from Asia, 25 percent from Europe, 20 percent from the U.S. and 5 percent from other countries.

The highest FDI last year was achieved as a result of Gangseo District’s Mieum Foreign Investment Zone, where foreign companies received free 50-year leases on the sites and other dramatic incentives. 

Also, Sega Sammy Holdings’ purchase of the land containing BEXCO’s additional facilities in Haeundae District’s Centum City amounted to $115 million, which is the largest real estate transaction in Busan and has hugely impacted investment trends in the city.

In addition, on March 28, one of the world’s top three pump manufacturing companies, Germany’s KSB, decided to invest $15 million in Mieum Foreign Investment Zone in Gangseo District to build a factory.

Moreover, there has been an increase in real estate purchases by foreigners in Marine City, which overlooks beautiful Haeundae Beach, and also the Gijang area.   According to the Haeundae District and Gijang County offices, foreigners’ purchases of real estate surged in 2011 and continue to expand. Haeundae District stated that the number of foreigners’ purchases went up from 89 in 2010 to 99 in 2011, and last year, the number was 96.

The total value also jumped from 4 billion won ($3.6 million) in 2010 to 7.8 billion won in 2011, and in 2012, the amount was 7.6 billion won. The total area of real estate purchases by foreigners was 2,777 square meters (29,900 square feet) in 2010, 3,209 square meters in 2011 and 7,416 last year, which shows a sharp increase.

The real estate purchases by foreigners were mostly centered in Marine City. In the case of Gijang, there was a total of 21 real estate purchases in 2010 worth 2.77 billion won, and in 2011, there were 42 cases worth 7.48 billion won - a more than a two-fold increase.

An official of the Youth Center said, "We strive to provide a fun experience for all visitors. We hope that many people will come to the Center this Sunday and enjoy a variety of activities in the beautiful natural setting we have here."

The year-round family theme park, the Hwamyeong Outdoor Swimming Pool, will be operated as a children’s outdoor play space from April 3rd through June 6th. 

The theme park is equipped with a variety of entertainment facilities―bumper cars, kids' train, trampolines, mini-biking, unusual bikes, and two water rides (paddle boats and bumper boats)― and a Chinese circus is scheduled to perform.

Open hours are from 10 am until 5 pm on weekdays, and from 9:30 am until 5:30 pm on weekends. Admission is 2,000 won (including two rides). Ride fees are 1,000 to 4,000 won each. The Ride-All-Day Pass (admission plus unlimited rides) costs 5,000 to 10,000 won depending on age, and the Ride-All-Day Pass plus circus performance costs 10,000 to 15,000 won.

An infirmary and safety officer will be available for children’s safety, and a snack bar will also be operated.

An official of the Busan Nakdong River Management Executive Office said, “We hope that people enjoy a variety of rides and performances at the Hwamyeong Outdoor Swimming Pool during the spring.”

How to get there: Take Metro Line No. 2 to Sujeong Station , then leave by Exit No. 3, or take Bus Nos. 15, 59, 111, 121 or 126 and get off at Sujeong Station.
