Marine leisure takes charge of Busan's summer
Korea International Marine Leisure Week (KIMA Week) is an annual summer event that aims to promote local sea-based leisure, industry and culture. The festival officially begins on Aug. 21, but KIMA-related activities began on the first of the month and will continue to be held at Gwangalli Beach and The Bay 101 near Haeundae Beach throughout the entirety of August.
The opening ceremony will occur at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at Gwangalli Beach. It will feature a parade of yachts, motorized surfboards and water jetpacks and will be a must-see event of Busan's summer. KIMA Week participants can rent row boats and enjoy VR experiences free of charge on-site and can apply for paddleboards, dinghies and kayaks in advance via the KIMA PASS application at a discount rate of 5,000 won. The festival will be broadcast live on Aug. 22 and 23 on radio and video platforms. Download the KIMA app (바다야 놀자) on the App Store and Play Store.
Marine competition will also be a part of KIMA. Dinghy races will take place at the Korea Marine and Ocean University on Aug. 22, and rowing races will be held at Gwangalli Beach on both Aug. 22 and 23. Events in swimming will also occur at the latter site on Aug. 29. The fun stretches into the next month as surfers can compete in their own contests at Songjeong Beach on Sept. 5 and 6. The schedule is subject to change.
