Sensory Grammar (감각의 문법)

 

2021 Collection: Sensory Grammar is the third exhibition of works from the museum collection since the opening of Museum of Contemporary Art Busan. The museum has acquired 231 artworks in its collection to date and 20 artworks by 19 artists have been selected for this show. Exhibitions of museum collections are considered effective in realizing and confirming a museum’s identity. 

 

At present, we are experiencing in our cultural environment one of the most significant trends in what is known as contemporary art. Art developed as a unique cultural phenomenon in the history of human civilization and continues to this day, meaning art has the power to make and evolve its own history. Contemporary art has inherited the mantle of modern art, but occupies an ideological space distinct from modern art, specifying de-categorization. Therefore, art at present can take any possible form or expression. What distinguishes art from non-art in this era is not superficial externalities or use of conventional or unconventional media, but rather the context of language and the social and cultural definitions of our art world.

 

In general, in art of the past, scenes, figures and their metaphorical connotations were where the ultimate message and meaning of artworks could be found. The beauty of the figures in art of the past represented a sensory pleasure that appealed to our desires and intuitions. Simply to see art served as its basic function. However, art of the present demands much more of us and expresses far more complicated needs. Now it is necessary to understand the appropriate meanings and values which artworks signify by interpreting images beyond merely seeing them. Current art is not a window through which to look at the landscape outside, so to speak, but rather the explanation and attachment of opinions to the events that take place outside that window. Accordingly, it deals with the problems of art itself and society, and reflects, accuses, and evokes as well as provides or processes new knowledge; thus, enabling a variety of interpretations. Such phenomena mean that art, which once unequivocally occupied the realm of emotion, now generates and communicates in a specific context through proper access to logic and language. Appreciation of current art means to derive sensory and semantic enjoyment from an interpretation of the language spoken by that artwork. 

 

Each contemporary artwork in 2021 Collection: Sensory Grammar should be understood as its own individual agent of communication, reflecting the world in a unique language. This language, however, is not a grammar-dependent tool. It speaks through culture, not grammar, and the title of the exhibition references this. Our senses do not obey grammatical rules, and we lack the iconology through which to read and interpret today’s art. Nevertheless, should we not seek to develop some kind of sensory grammar to allow us to interpret meaning in the sea of individualized languages spoken by contemporary art?
