The body responds before words and remembers longer than language. Language may at times smooth over and summarize an event, but the subtle tremors retained in the body remain as unprocessed, uncompromised signals. When such traces rise again as living voices, the body becomes not merely the product of experience but a medium of testimony that summons the past into the present. This exhibition attends to the moment when the irrepressible responses of the body return as living voices and names that condition Embodied Testimony.
Even as we define moments in life and draw conclusions, tensions and traces linger in the body that elude documentation. These subtle sensations signal that the process of living has not fully come to an end; they are also the body’s most truthful utterances. Testimony is not simply the repetition of the past, but a process through which the time that has passed is transformed into present experience by borrowing the sensations that the record has overlooked. If fact fixes the past as a static scene, testimony restores the reality of that time to the present through the body.
Embodied Testimony brings into the present selected works from the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art collection—works that had long remained in storage—by three artists whose practices center on the body. To retrieve and reconfigure works preserved over time is not merely to exhibit the past, but to reactivate the vitality accumulated within them as questions for today. Once dormant in the darkness of the vault, these works now begin to address viewers under the lights of the gallery. Within that address lies the possibility that, through the body, we who must live out the present may confront the conditions of our own existence and open new paths of thought.
