#16. 정철교 Jeong Chulkyo
정철교(1953- )는 2010년 신고리 원자력발전소가 있는 울산 서생으로 이주한 후, 후쿠시마 원전 사고 등을 계기로 원자력발전소 문제에 관심을 가지며 지역 풍경을 기록하는 작업을 지속해오고 있다. 또한 그는 우리 사회에 가장 적합한 대안 에너지라 각광받고 있는 원자력이라는 이미지에 은폐된 핵 발전의 허상을 폭로하고 원자력발전소 가동과 건설 중단을 촉구하는 예술가 탈핵 운동 “핵몽”의 일원으로 활동하기도 했다.
〈일광 칠암 전원마을〉(2017), 〈서생, 배꽃 필 무렵 〉(2016), 〈고구마 밭〉(2020)은 신고리 원자력발전소와 울산 서생의 풍경을 묘사한 작품들로 앞이 툭 트인 바다와 양지바른 너른 들판, 푸른 바다와 솔숲이 있는 천혜의 자연환경, 멀리 보이는 고리 원전과 송전탑을 동시에 담아내었다. 아름다운 자연 풍광과 위험하고 불안한 기운이 상존하며 붉은 색조로 뒤덮인 야만적인 풍경화에는 이주와 보상, 평범한 일상에서 핵 위험의 잠재적 경계에 머물기를 요구받는 삶의 역설, 균열되고 고장 나버린 현실 속에서 주민들이 느끼는 낯설고 이질적인 정서가 깃들어 있다.
Since moving to Seosaeng in Ulsan in 2010, the location of the Shin Kori Nuclear Power Plant, Jeong Chulkyo (1953- ) has been documenting the local scenery, concerned by nuclear power and its issues, and prompted by events such as the Fukushima nuclear disaster. He is a member of the Hack Mong (Delusions of Nuclear Power) artist movement, advocating for the exposure of the delusion of safe nuclear power, concealed behind its image as the most viable alternative energy source for society, and urging a halt to the operation and construction of nuclear power plants.
Ilgwang Chilam Town House (2017), Seoseng, When the Pear Blossoms Bloom (2016), and Sweet Potato Field (2020), depict the scenery of Seosaeng and the Shin Kori Nuclear Power Plant, capturing the breathtaking natural environment, with the open sea stretching to the horizon, sun-kissed open fields and pine forests, along with distant views of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant and transmission towers. In these uncompromising paintings, the juxtaposition of the beautiful natural landscapes with the ominous atmosphere, drenched in red tones, conveys ideas of displacement and restitution, the paradox of ordinary, everyday life spent under the constant threat of potential nuclear hazard, and reflects the unfamiliar and alien emotions experienced by residents within a fractured and malfunctioning reality.
