킴 시몬손(1974- )은 핀란드 숲, 북유럽 및 스칸디나비아 민속과 대중문화, 종말론, 일본 만화 및 비디오 게임 문화에서 영감을 받아 기술 진보에 의한 문명의 발전이 그리는 동화적이고 상상적인 세계의 이면에 놓인 현대 사회의 분쟁과 갈등을 통찰한다.
실제 이끼가 덮인 듯 채도 높은 녹색 표피의 아이들로 구성된 〈이끼 인간〉(2016-2023) 조각 시리즈는 세라믹 조각에 산업 섬유 기술을 접목한 작가 특유의 기법으로 만들어졌다. 각 조각상은 식물학자, 우주비행사와 같은 권위적인 인물들, 잔 다르크, 예수와 같은 역사적이고 상징적인 인물들로 형상화된다. 이끼가 자연과 조화를 이루며 땅, 바위, 나무줄기를 에워싸 일종의 보호제의 역할을 하듯이, 이들은 녹색 위장술로 자연과 동화됨으로써 스스로 신화가 되어야만 하는 우리 시대의 존재들을 은유한다.
Kim Simonsson (1974- ) explores the conflicts and tensions in modern society that lie beneath the enchanting and imaginative world of the progress of civilization through technological advancement, drawing inspiration from Finnish forests, Nordic and Scandinavian folklore and pop culture, eschatological concepts, and Japanese manga and video game culture.
The sculpture series, Moss People (2016-2023), composed of a collection of vibrant, green-skinned children seemingly covered in actual moss, is a combination unique to the artist of ceramics and industrial soft flocking fiber techniques. The sculptures take the form of establishment figures, such as a botanist or astronaut, or historical and symbolic figures like Jeanne d‘Arc and Jesus. Like moss, which exists in harmony with its surroundings, wrapping around soil, rocks, and tree trunks as a form of protective cover, the sculptures metaphorically embody our existence in modern times, forced to become myths themselves by blending in with nature through green camouflage.
