A celebration of culture, from Austin to Busan Busan's Festival Shiwol exhibit at SXSW 2025 This September, Busan will once again transform into a citywide stage for creativity and celebration with the return of Festival Shiwol, running from Sept. 21 to Oct. 3. The autumn festival brings together a rich variety of performances, exhibitions and events, offering visitors a blend of film, music, art, food, technology and cultural experiences. Festival Shiwol, launched in 2024 as Korea's first "all-in-one" festival model, unites previously independent events under one umbrella. The inaugural event was a success, having drawn 400,000 attendees and generating a lasting impact on Busan's local economy and global image. Organizers emphasize that Festival Shiwol is more than just a series of events scheduled at the same time. The goal is to create a dynamic ecosystem where each program naturally connects and enriches the others. Visitors who come for a film screening may discover a live performance, a startup expo or a food festival along the way. Festival Shiwol's vision draws directly from South by Southwest, the convergence festival held annually in Austin, Texas, United States. SXSW is widely regarded as one of the most successful festival models in the world, merging entertainment with entrepreneurship and cultural programming with economic growth. By adopting this formula, Busan hopes to replicate Austin's success and develop Festival Shiwol into a cultural landmark and a powerful engine for the local economy. SXSW began modestly as a music festival in 1987, with only 700 participants. Over nearly four decades, it has grown into one of the world's most influential and recognizable brands, and a must-visit for global business and entertainment leaders. In 2024, over half a million people participated in SXSW events and conferences. SXSW has transformed Austin into a global hub for creatives, technologists and entrepreneurs, significantly enhancing the city's international brand. Austin has since become synonymous with creativity, innovation and inclusivity - a reputation fueled mainly by the success of SXSW. The festival also generates substantial economic returns through visitor spending during the event and SXSW's year-round program of activities. It has strengthened city infrastructure, revitalized local communities and encouraged international investment, creating a self-sustaining cycle of growth. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, SXSW produced a total estimated economic impact of USD 380.9 million (approximately 533 billion won) in 2023 alone. This includes spending generated by conference and festival attendees, exhibitors, performers and sponsors, as well as how that spending impacts wider supply chains and household spending in the local area. The figure also accounts for SXSW's year-round activities and presence in the city. Busan sees a similar opportunity. By modeling Festival Shiwol after SXSW, the city hopes to showcase its unique identity, invigorate its economy and burnish its international reputation. Based on last year's debut, the future looks promising.※Festival Shiwol Website : Click※Festival Shiwol App : Click 한국어로 읽기(Read in Korean) 부산 글로벌 융복합축제 ‘페스티벌 시월’ 9월 21일~10월 3일미국 오스틴 텍사스 SXSW 모델로 도시 성장 노린다 오는 9월 21일부터 10월 3일까지 부산 전역이 창의와 축제의 무대로 변신한다.

Our writer on the street asks: "What brings you to Busan?" Busan has been welcoming a growing number of international tourists. For this edition, we spoke with visitors from around the world to discover what they find most charming about the city.●Three sisters from Germany: Emily (right), Jessi (middle), and Franzi (left) After a few days in Seoul, sisters Emily, Jessi and Franzi took the train south to explore Busan. "We wanted to see what South Korea was like and also the seaside," Emily said. Jessi added that social media recommendations led them here, while Franzi hoped to enjoy the sunshine. Their first impressions were unanimous: Busan's mix of mountains, beaches and city life made it stand out. "It's not as big as Seoul, but still it's quite a big city, so you can still do loads of activities," Jessi said. Franzi praised the city's convenience, noting how easy it is to reach both mountains and the sea within half an hour. Food was a highlight for Emily, who recalled a "Cheese Dakgalbi" dish she loved. But beyond food and scenery, the sisters agreed that the kindness and generosity of Busan people made the most significant impact. "Even if they cannot speak English, they will try to help you with their feet, with their hands, with everything," Franzi said.●A couple from Spain: Ana (right) and Juanma (left) The couple, both teachers, came to Korea out of curiosity. "We wanted to know about the culture, to visit the country and try the food, and it was better than we expected," Ana said. Juanma added, "We have been traveling around Korea and we didn't expect a lot from Busan, but we are amazed by everything in the city." They explained that they had looked up blogs and YouTube videos before arriving, but left room for surprise once in Busan. When asked about highlights, Ana replied, "We just came from the fish market and it was very surprising - the atmosphere, everything - and also the temple which is next to the sea." Saha-Gu District Office■ YOLO Route 7 Every sunset paints a picture, but summer sunsets stir something deeper. The sun lingers, reluctant to hand the sky over to the moon. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of colors - an Impressionist masterpiece in motion. Summer is nature's showiest season, saturating the world in color and overwhelming the senses with dazzling skies. There is science behind this beauty; the warm, moisture-rich air scatters sunlight more dramatically, producing deeper, more vibrant hues. One of the best places to witness this evening spectacle is along YOLO Galmaetgil Route 7, on the western edge of Busan. The trail's riverside setting offers uninterrupted views of the sun sinking into the Nakdonggang River. Reflections shimmer on the water as the sky above shifts through a kaleidoscope of colors, making the entire walk feel like a living painting. The 7-kilometer path is smooth and well-maintained, with restrooms and rest stops along the way. It takes about an hour and 40 minutes to complete. The trail is ideal for a sunset stroll or a breezy bike ride. Highlights include Jangnim Port, where brightly painted buildings evoke the canals of Venice, earning it the nickname "Bunezia," a playful mash-up of "Busan" and "Venezia." Before reaching Dadaepo Beach, follow a short uphill path to Amisan Observatory. From this vantage point, the river, sea and sandbanks stretch out in a breathtaking panorama. Affectionately known as the "Sunset Picnic," YOLO Galmaetgil Route 7 captures the magic of summer in Busan.
