Ongoing plans spur triumphant expectations
On June 21, Busan successfully finished the second presentation for the World Expo 2030 at the General Assembly of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris. The Korean delegation, including City Hall and the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was in attendance, forming the "Korea One Team." They delivered messages of strength and confidence, in addition to a detailed plan for anticipatory development. The team also introduced Busan North Port, the proposed expo venue, highlighting the sustainable floating U.N.-habitat project.
Mayor Park believes that with continued national and international cooperation, Busan will host the World Expo in 2030.
President Yoon Suk-yeol stated that the mega-event would allow all to experience global futuristic innov-ations. He also discussed his aspirations for Busan to be the host city, the three additional presentations and the final bid. Next year, the on-site inspection, the last presentation and the big decision will take place. National and city governmental entities continue efforts to demonstrate that Busan is the best place to hold the expo.
Mayor Park Heong-joon, leader of the Pan-citizen Hosting Committee for World Expo 2030 Busan, enthusiastically continues his efforts toward a successful bid. He has a strong desire and enthusiasm for the World Expo. Mayor Park spoke at the second presentation in Paris in June. His position and expertise make him one of the best people to ask whether Korea's second largest city will host the World Expo in 2030.
Mayor Park Heong-joon is from Choryang-dong, Dong-gu (district). He received a master's and doctorate degree from Korea University. Known as a fluent and organized orator, Park utilized these skills in various fields such as journalism, entertainment and education, including teaching as a professor at Dong-A University, where he worked in various capacities for 30 years. Q. What makes Busan the best place to host the World Expo in 2030?
A. Busan, which links Eurasia and the Pacific, has grown into a city that embraces all cultures, races, ages, genders and religions. After the Korean War, Busan became a humanitarian locale full of care and support. Through these experiences, the direction of society and humanity is well understood.
The city has a pleasant year-round oceanic climate, so warm sunlight and cool breezes will welcome and last throughout the expo. Additi-onally, our country is known as one of the safest countries for travelers. Therefore, should Busan host the World Expo 2030, visitors can fully enjoy great weather and a safe environment at the expo.
Q. What is Busan's theme for the expo and could you tell us more about it?
A. The theme is "Transforming Our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future." It encompasses the world's willingness to cope with climate change and analyze uncertain times such as that of the pandemic. The theme also attempts to address and respond to changes in digital civili-zation, referred to as digital transformation.
Busan North Port, located in Jung-gu (district), is the proposed venue for the World Expo 2030 Busan.
Q. How could the expo transform Busan?
A. The World Expo 2030 isn't only a mega-event. It is a well-balanced solution for national development, an opportunity for accelerated progress and a chance for new approaches. We expect that the World Expo can be our solution. We can develop and utilize the necessary infrastructure by preparing for and hosting the World Expo. One example is Gadeok New Airport. Isn't the World Expo host expected to have a round-the-clock international airport?
Q. What efforts go into promoting the city's candidature?
A. As we relay Busan's attractive attributes, capabilities and enthusi-asm, we need ongoing support from people citywide, nationwide and worldwide. One step toward this active promotion was the creation of the governmental Hosting Committee for World Expo 2030 Busan. Five enterprises' CEOs have since joined as vice chairs and 10 additional CEOs pledged to participate in various promotions.
Q. Does Busan have a high chance of success?
A. Based on the responses to the presentation and the favorable reaction of those involved, we are confident Busan will become the next host city. Korea's worldwide impact and Busan's dynamic attributes can lead to a successful bid. We here at City Hall and on the committee will do our best to make this reality. Please join us!
