Busan is Good for international students
On Oct. 4, Busan officials held a conference to discuss ways to attract more international students. The meeting focused on supporting international students in their studies, work, and daily life, as well as on enhancing the global competitiveness of local universities.
The Busan government and local universities will collaborate on a “one-stop” support system to help international students transition from “study to settlement.” The goal is for international students to continue to work and live in Busan post-graduation.
The city is especially keen on increasing the number of international students studying science and engineering to bolster the workforce of local industries.
To further these initiatives, Busan and local universities will host a promotional expo in Vietnam in November. Similar events are planned for Mongolia and Central Asia next year.
Additionally, the national government has introduced policies aimed at attracting international students. At the 7th Central Regional Cooperation Conference earlier this year, Busan and other local governments called for revamping the visa system for international students. In response, the Ministry of Justice announced a new immigration policy in September. The policy extends the job search and internship periods for graduates proficient in Korean. The job search visa period increases from two to three years; the internship visa period increases from six months to one year.
Furthermore, the national government has announced two new visas. The “Top-Tier Visa” will be introduced to attract highly skilled foreign workers in high-tech fields, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technology, and aerospace, by offering immigration and residency benefits.
The “Youth Dream Visa” will provide work and cultural experience opportunities for young people from countries that fought for South Korea during the Korean War or from nations in economic partnership with South Korea.
