Centre Pompidou outpost coming to Busan

On Sept. 9, Busan and the Centre Pompidou in Paris signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a satellite branch of the world-renowned art museum here in the city. The signing ceremony took place in the International Conference Room at Busan City Hall.

The MOU represents the first step in a broader partnership to promote contemporary art, expand public access to cultural spaces, and foster international cultural exchange. The initial agreement is set for five years, with an option to renew. Under the partnership, Busan and the Centre Pompidou will establish an arts commission to exchange ideas and shape the city's cultural landscape.

The Centre Pompidou Busan will be located in a 15,000-square-meter site in Igidae Art Park. The facility will include galleries, studios, auditoriums, classrooms and storage areas. Construction on the new building is scheduled for 2027, with the grand opening slated for 2031.

Igidae Art Park is a popular tourist destination in Busan, attracting approximately 1.5 million visitors annually with its natural beauty, skywalk, and the Galmaetgil Trails. The city anticipates that the Centre Pompidou Busan will play a pivotal role in establishing Busan as a global cultural and tourism hub while strengthening the local art scene.

The Centre Pompidou Busan will feature a variety of exhibitions tailored to Busan while incorporating the essence of contemporary Western art from the Centre Pompidou's collection, which includes over 140,000 works. The core programming will consist of a permanent year-round exhibition, an annual special exhibition, and professional training initiatives developed by the Centre Pompidou. 

In addition to showcasing world-class art, the Centre Pompidou Busan will host exhibitions and workshops for local artists, thereby forging a global platform designed to support and enhance the regional arts ecosystem.
