Igidae Park to become a masterpiece
Igidae Park, renowned for its stunning natural scenery, will transform into a world-class art and culture destination.
Igidae Park, spanning from the southern end of Gwangalli Beach to Oryukdo Quay, is renowned for its stunning natural scenery and is a beloved eco-tourism destination. Visitors enjoy coastal walkways that showcase dramatic seaside cliffs and the sparkling blue sea.
The Busan City government unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the 1.25-million-square-meter park into a world-class art and culture destination. This vision, announced during the 20th Busan Future Innovative Meeting on Oct. 31, aims to seamlessly integrate art installations with the area's natural and ecological surroundings.
Officials took inspiration from global landmarks like Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Japan's Naoshima Island, and Germany's Museum Insel Hombroich in deciding how to transform Igidae Park.
The transformation plan divides the park into three distinct zones. Officials expect to complete the entire project by 2040.
Oryukdo Art Center (concept art)
First, the Oryukdo Art Center, envisioned as the gateway to the park, will feature the Oryukdo Visitor Center, an art gallery and an observation deck. Facilities will include exhibition spaces for local artists and family-friendly amenities.
Gallery in the Seaside Forest (concept art)
Second is the Gallery in the Seaside Forest. Situated along forest trails, this zone will host six to seven private galleries showcasing art by domestic and international artists. The city will support artists and museums wishing to establish a presence in Busan, with initiatives starting in January 2025.
International Art Center
Finally, the International Art Center will feature a museum and serve as the cultural centerpiece of the park. The zone will offer visitors a versatile space to immerse themselves in global art while enjoying the area's natural beauty.
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon emphasized the significance of this project, stating, "Busan is gaining competitiveness in various areas to leap forward as a global hub city. Culture and tourism are crucial factors in elevating the city's status." He added, "This basic plan for Igidae Art Park will become the starting point for nurturing Busan's artists and developing culture and art in Busan, as well as providing world-class cultural opportunities to citizens."
With its blend of art, culture, and nature, the redeveloped Igidae Art Park will become a premier destination for residents and visitors alike.
