Busan will host the 26th International Robotics Olympiad in January 2025. Established in 1999, the IRO is the oldest and largest international robotics competition. The annual event features thousands of participants from all around the world. It is held to promote scientific thinking, nurture potential leaders and cultivate the talent of students interested in robotics.

The International Robotics Olympiad Committee selected Busan during a general assembly in Athens, Greece, on Jan. 20. The city won the right to host next year’s competition over Langkawi, Malaysia. Busan was chosen thanks to its abundant infrastructure and wealth of experience hosting major international events. In particular, the diplomatic efforts of the Korean team, including Park Dong-seok, Director General of Future Industry Bureau, and Busan City Councilor Lee Seung-woo, shone through.

The competition to select national representatives, the Korean League, will also be held in Busan. Scheduled for four days in August 2024, the Korean League will see aspiring roboticists from all over the country compete in 17 categories. Winners will have the honor of representing Korea during the IRO next January.

These upcoming events will be a boon for Busan’s burgeoning robotics industry and will help establish a strong foundation for the city’s robotics education.
