The city’s anticipated cultural landmarks now have official names, chosen by citizen vote: The Busan Opera House and the Busan Concert Hall.

City officials gathered ideas and opinions of industry experts to develop a brand strategy for the two cultural arts centers. The results were then put to vote. Over 4,300 people participated in the survey, which was held from Sept. 11 to 22 earlier this year.

64% of respondents selected “Busan Opera House” as the official name for the performance hall being built at North Port. “Dongbaek Opera House,” named after the city’s official flower, came in 2nd with 19% of the vote. In last place was “Busan Pearl Opera House,” perhaps in reference to the hall’s planned exterior, with 17% of the vote.

For the performing arts center being built at Citizens’ Park, 56% of respondents selected “Busan Concert Hall.” “Park Concert Hall” and “B-Bratorium” (a play on the word “vibrato” and suffix -arium) received 24% and 20% of the vote respectively.

Citizens preferred the official names for their intuitive and representative appeal. City officials will now develop the facilities’ symbols and brand slogans for promotion and marketing by December 2023.

Busan Opera House is expected to open in 2025, while the Busan Concert Hall is expected to be complete in 2026.
