Sea Art Festival 2023 takes place at Ilgwang Beach, Gijang-gun county, until Nov. 19. Under the theme of "Flickering Shores, Sea Imaginaries," this year's festival invites viewers to rethink our relationship with the sea, to consider the beauty and the fragility of our shores, and to explore alternative frameworks and visions for engaging with the ocean and marine environments.
The main venues for the exhibition are Ilgwang Beach and Old Ilgwang Church, which was originally established as a Methodist prayer center in 1954. After shutting down, it was transformed into an artistic space.
U.K.-based Greek curator Irini Papadimitriou is the show's artistic director. Having grown up in a family that works in the maritime industry in Greece, Papadimitriou has an intimate understanding of ocean issues. The 42 works created by artists from 20 countries explore how humans depend on and exploit the world's oceans.
In addition to the artwork, festivalgoers can participate in various educational programs. "The Other Seas" is screening six short films on ocean-related topics, including the state of the shipping industry, marine land development, deep-sea mining, rising sea levels, and seawater pollution.
Visitors of all ages can also enjoy making crafts and paper kites that celebrate Busan's diversity of marine life.
