The city of Busan will be a battlefield for the data war in November.

The 2023 Busan Ocean Data Hackathon will take place from Nov. 18 to 20 aboard a PanStar Cruise ship.

A hackathon, a portmanteau of “hacking” and “marathon,” is an event where people engage in rapid and collaborative engineering to make a business model or digital service over a relatively short period of time such as 24 or 48 hours.

Hackers will look at the convergence of ocean and big data. Potential projects range from digital transformation, new business models and new services to respond to climate change in the ocean industry and smart maritime and fishery technology.

Any group consisting of up to four members can participate in the competition. To join, an application and project proposal should be submitted online by Oct 31. After the evaluation, 10 groups will complete in the final round which will take place over two days.

During the final round, ocean experts and big data analysts will mentor teams. On the final day, Nov. 20, each team will present their projects and four teams will win a share of a cash prize.
