Masks that reveal ASEAN cultural identity

6-3cw6 copy

The ASEAN Culture House, located in Haeundae-gu district, is hosting "Alternative Identities: Masks of ASEAN & Korea," an exhibition that introduces visitors to the cultural importance masks play in different countries. Over 200 face masks, garments and accessories from Korea and ASEAN nations will be displayed until July 23.

The show is organized into five sections. Part one, "The Origin of Masks," introduces the origins of masks used for shamanistic purposes to ward off disasters and diseases and to pray for abundant harvests. Part two, "Representation of Myth," displays masks used in dramatic performances of ancient epics.

Part three, "Alternative Realities," is dedicated to "hat tuong," a form of Vietnamese opera.

The fourth section, "Reflections of Self," demonstrates how masks are used as an artistic tool to express individuals' thoughts and characteristics.

Also included are contemporary artworks that consider the modern meaning of masks. Singapore artist Lim Soo Ngee contributed several sculptures to the show; his work examines how individuals wear different masks for different situations in modern society, including the necessity of protective masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final section of the exhibition is dedicated to "talchum," Korean traditional mask dance performance.
