Busan Cultural Center is hosting a special exhibition titled “The Greatest Colorist: Michel-Henry,” exploring the artistic world of Michel-Henry, a master of French figurative painting.

Running through Oct. 25, the exhibition offers a closer look at his distinctive approach to still life, in which familiar subjects are reimagined through rich colors, light and a pinch of imagination. Held in Busan to mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, the exhibition has drawn attention from art enthusiasts in Korea.

In the aftermath of World War II, the French art scene saw the rise of abstract painting and Miserabilism, a movement reflecting the harsh realities and wounds left by war. Michel-Henry, however, forged his own artistic path, turning to light and color to express happiness and hope even in difficult times. Many of his works place vibrant bouquets or fruit bowls in the foreground, set against landscapes that unfold beyond them. Bouquets arranged by windows immediately draw the eye, while views of cities such as Paris, Venice and Rome expand the composition beyond a simple still life. Rather than remaining static arrangements of objects, these works create a sense of vitality through the interplay of flowers, landscapes and the natural world. A rich and harmonious palette of colors gives the painting an immediate visual impact, evoking a sense of beauty that is felt almost instinctively.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Michel-Henry's death, this exhibition is the largest presentation of his work to date, featuring 10 previously unreleased works on public display for the first time. Visitors can explore around 120 works, including some of his representative pieces. The paintings invite visitors into a world of mesmerizing color, showcasing the radiant landscapes of Europe and the vitality of flowers.
