On June 1, the central Korean government lowered the national risk level of COVID-19 from "serious" to "alert." The downgrade in risk assessment comes with the relaxation of nearly all COVID-19 restrictions implemented during the global pandemic. However, strict measures remain to protect high-risk and vulnerable groups.

To mark the occasion, Mayor Park visited the Busan Medical Center in the Yeonje-gu district to receive an update on the COVID-19 response and express his gratitude to the medical staff who dedicated themselves to caring for patients.

Medical staff in hospitals and medical facilities have been on the front lines working tirelessly to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and save lives. Notably, the city’s first reported coronavirus patient was hospitalized and treated at BMC on Feb. 20, 2020. Throughout the pandemic, BMC endeavored to protect and save patients while serving as the region’s designated infectious disease hospital. BMC also operated the city’s first living treatment center, where COVID-19 patients who did not need to be hospitalized were sent to be monitored and prevent the spread of infection.

On behalf of the citizens, Mayor Park paid his respects to the medical staff at BMC for their hard work over the last three years and four months since the coronavirus outbreak.
