New service helps young people exercise their ‘Right to be Forgotten’
On April 24, the Personal Information Protection Commission launched a pilot service aimed at granting children and youth greater control over their personal information on websites and online services.
The initiative, known as the "Right to be Forgotten Pilot Project for Children and Adolescents," enables individuals to receive support in deleting online content that includes personal information such as their name, date of birth, phone number, address, and pictures.
Individuals up 24 years old can now request the removal of online posts containing their personal information that were uploaded when they were under 18 years old. To initiate the process, they can visit the Personal Information Portal (privacy.go.kr) and provide a list of URLs for the posts they wish to delete. Additionally, they must present materials to verify that they were the creators of those posts. The PIPC will assist by contacting online service providers and requesting them to "exclude access" to the personal information on behalf of the individuals.
The PIPC is a Korean government agency tasked with protecting citizens’ personal information and privacy rights.
