The Busan Hangul Institute is accepting applications for its final round of Korean language courses this year, open until Sept. 14. The institute is also looking for dedicated participants for its mentorship program, which pairs residents with international students.
This institute, run by the Busan Global City Foundation, provides free classes to develop the Korean language skills of international students and graduates seeking employment in Korea. To qualify for the courses, students must have an Alien Registration Card with a D-2, D-4, D-10 or F-4 visa. The classes are tailored to various needs, ranging from TOPIK preparation to improving speaking and writing skills. This final term will run for almost eight weeks, from Sept. 22 to Nov. 13.
The mentorship program aims to encourage cultural exchange while helping local international students improve their Korean proficiency. Busan citizens and university students can serve as mentors, offering international participants the opportunity to build deeper connections with the city and foster mutual understanding.
Each mentor-mentee pair can explore activities together, from sharing perspectives on Korean culture to experiencing local events and attractions firsthand. The program can also have an academic focus, with mentors providing language support or offering guidance on completing assignments more effectively.
Applications for the mentorship program are accepted on a rolling basis. Those who apply by Sept. 14 will join the session running from Sept. 29 to Oct. 24, while applicants who apply by Oct. 14 will participate from Oct. 27 to Nov. 21.
Upon completing the program, mentors will receive benefits such as volunteer hours and a gift certificate worth 10,000 won. At the year-end ceremony, outstanding participants will be recognized with awards from the Mayor of Busan and the CEO of the Busan Global City Foundation.
