In a first for Korea’s major metropolitan cities, all children 12 years old and under can ride public transit for free.

Currently, children 5 years old and under may ride for free. From Oct. 6, Busan will expand the benefit to all elementary-school-aged children. This move will benefit 184,000 children living in the city.

The free rides can be taken on all city and village buses and metro lines 1 to 4. The benefit does not apply to the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit, the Donghae Line and the No. 2000 bus.

To ride for free, child passengers must use a special transportation card, which can be purchased at convenience stores or metro stations citywide. Then, the child’s birthdate must be registered on the card to activate it.
