Busan Metropolitan City will participate in the nation’s pan-government monitoring system for heat-related illnesses. From May 20 to September 30, medical institutions citywide will track the number of patients with heat-related illnesses who visit emergency rooms. This information will then be reported daily to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The KDCA will post the reports of heat-related illnesses in the city and the country on its official website.

Heat-related illnesses are serious medical conditions that occur when the body is unable to cope with exposure to abnormal or prolonged amounts of heat and humidity. There are three types of heat-related illnesses: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, fatigue, rapid heart rate and loss of consciousness. The most serious cases may even result in death.

The monitoring system has been in place since 2011 in to raise awareness of heat-related illnesses and minimize the impact of heat waves on residents. In 2022, 53 Busan residents suffered heat-related illnesses; thankfully, no one died as a result.
