The Busan Modern & Contemporary History Museum invites guests to enjoy a series of performances and humanities lectures beginning this month. The cultural events will be held in the museum’s new annex, which opened in March.

“Annex Salon” is an ongoing series of lectures focused on modern life and culture. The theme for this year’s program is “The Humanity of Objects.” Each lecturer will discuss how their personal belongings reflect their thoughts on philosophy and social aspects of this era.

The series’ first speaker is award-winning writer and novelist Chang Kang-myoung. After majoring in urban engineering at Yonsei University, Chang worked for 11 years as a journalist for the news outlet Dong-A Ilbo. In 2011, Chang won the prestigious Hankyoreh Literary Award for his novel “The Bleached,” an unflinching portrayal of social pressure and suicide. Since then, Chang has authored several more books and has won several more awards; his writing is praised for its realistic depictions of our capitalistic society.

Audiences may also recognize Chang from his TV appearances on “The Days: The Birth of Busan” and “The Dictionary of Useless Crime Knowledge.”

Chang will speak on Saturday, May 13, at 2 p.m. He will talk about his daily life and share his perspectives on contemporary issues.

In addition, music performances will be presented every month in the annex lobby. This year, the “Monthly Performance” will showcase musicians of various genres performing under the theme of “Old City Love Song.” Audiences will be treated to jazz, classical, or indie music inspired by the history and stories of Busan’s original city center.

The first performer is actress and guitarist Haeun Jang. Jang was a finalist on the JTBC audition program “Super Band 2” and starred in the 2019 movie “The Days We Met Again.” Jang has a large social media following and is renowned for her classical guitar skills.

Individuals interested in attending these events can visit the museum’s official website (busan.go.kr/mmch) to make a reservation (Korean language only). 40 seats are available for each program.
