For the first time since it opened, the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan is showing an exhibition aimed at children. The project is called “The Post Modern Child” and will run in two parts. The first part has been open since Dec. 17, 2022, and will continue until April 23. The second edition of the exhibit will open on May 5 to commemorate Children’s Day.

Since opening, “The Post Modern Child” has been well received by children and their families. Children especially liked the art pieces depicting cartoon characters and cats. The museum has also tailored the viewing experience to children. For example, stepstools allow children to see artwork from an adult’s eye level and banners around the museum encourage children to ask questions about what they are looking at.

Furthermore, the museum has also begun a docent program for kids. The museum guides help children ages 5 to 7 experience featured exhibitions beyond simply delivering information. Children participating in the docent program can connect to the artwork through conversation, storytelling and various multimedia applications.

The museum also renewed its youth education program, “Ggomjirak.” The program enhances children’s artistic sensibility and creativity and helps them become independent art appreciators. Running every other Tuesday and Saturday through 2023, the program focuses on discussing art and allowing children to explore the exhibitions and use the museum as a playground.

Finally, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan has “Kids’ Book Island,” a children’s reading space designed to look like the natural environs of nearby Eulsukdo Island. Located on B1, the reading space contains picture books from around the world for children to enjoy. Reservations are required to use the space and can be made on the museum’s website (busan.go.kr/moca/index) or by calling 051-220-7381.
