Revised traffic law clarifies drivers' obligations at intersections

The "Enforcement Decree of The Road Traffic Act" has been updated to clarify drivers' obligations when turning right at a red light at intersections with crosswalks.

Previously, drivers were required to stop before the stop line or crosswalk and may turn right when the traffic light for the car is red if they don't disrupt traffic. The new regulation aims to eliminate confusion caused by unclear statements in the previous law, which led to pedestrian accidents in crosswalks.

According to the revised enforcement decree, drivers must come to a complete stop before the crosswalk when the traffic light is red. Also, if a right turn signal light is installed with a green arrow, drivers may only turn right when the light is green. Some parts of the country have already introduced and implemented new traffic signals specifically for right turns. The National Police Agency will monitor compliance with the updated regulations for a three-month transition period before deciding on enforcement measures.

Additionally, a new law took effect Jan. 1 prohibiting drivers from crossing over traffic lines. Those found in violation of this law will face a 30,000 won penalty and a 10 demerit-point penalty.

The revised enforcement decree is a step forward in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and improving traffic flow at intersections. Drivers are advised to familiarize themselves with the updated regulations and to always prioritize the safety of pedestrians.
