Free opera in Busan: Watch ‘Carmen’ at North Port

On July 11 and 12, Busan City will present a free outdoor performance of Georges Bizet’s iconic opera “Carmen” at a special outdoor stage in the Busan North Port Landmark area.
Admission is free, though visitors must register on the Classic Busan website, with reservations opening at 2 p.m. on June 24. With the Busan Opera House scheduled to open in 2027, the performance offers a rare opportunity to enjoy this beloved masterpiece against the scenic waterfront backdrop at North Port.
Led by Busan Concert Hall’s Artistic Director Myung-Whun Chung, expectations are high following the success of last December’s performance. Featuring internationally acclaimed artists, the event aims to make opera accessible to local audiences and allow them to experience the genre’s enduring appeal firsthand.
One of the most frequently performed operas in the world, “Carmen” is inspired by the French novel of the same name. It tells a passionate tale of love, jealousy and tragedy. Through vibrant orchestral melodies and beloved arias such as “Habanera” and the “Toreador Song,” the opera immerses audiences in the intense drama of 19th-century Seville, Spain.
Beyond the performance itself, the event promises a festive summer evening experience, blending music, food and the charm of Busan’s waterfront. A food truck zone will also be set up on site, allowing visitors to enjoy snacks and drinks while enjoying the summer breeze and the nighttime scenery of North Port.
During the reservation process, visitors can choose between the Seat Zone and the Picnic Zone. The Seat Zone offers a closer, more immersive experience, while the Picnic Zone provides a more relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for families and groups. Registered visitors may enter the venue from 5 p.m. If seats remain available due to cancellations or no-shows, on-site admission will also be offered after 7 p.m. In the event of rain, the performance may be canceled, with further announcements provided separately.
