The Healing Silence of Beomeosa Temple

For Buddhists, going to a temple is not only about worshipping the buddha and his teachings, but also a way to find peace, calm, and relaxation for the mind. During two years studying for a master’s degree in Busan, I found my healing place that I tended to visit every time my soul needed rest. It is Beomeosa Temple.

I came to Busan in August 2023, and like many international students. I faced a mix of challenges such as academic pressure, the loneliness of relocating to the new place, and adjusting to new environment, I longed for a healing activity just like I used to do back in my home country: visiting to temple. I accidently discover Beomeosa by searching on Naver and randomly go there. But from that day on, Beomeosa became more than a tourist site, it became a place that I can breathe, reflect, and heal.

Beomeosa is one of the oldest temples in Busan, founded in 678 CE during the Silla Dynasty. Beside its historical buildings, which house Buddhist cultural asset and spiritual history, the temple is surrounded by beautiful forest and a refreshing stream. These elements make me feel like being embraced by both nature and Buddhism. That why I love to visit this temple and spending time meditating and enjoying the peaceful silence.

I could confidently say that my favorite place in Busan is this temple. It is where I have shared many of my personal stories over the past two years. I went there on New Year’s Day to make wishes for a new beginning, prayed for my late aunty, found comfort during academic stress, and received the positive energy when feeling down. Even though I will leave Busan soon, I know in my heart I will comeback here again someday.
