[My Busan Story] A Small Heart Found in Busan

"My Busan Story" is a special series by Busan's English-language newspaper, inviting foreign residents to share their unique perspectives on life in the city. From unforgettable experiences and travel episodes to small everyday joys, these stories highlight the diverse voices that make Busan feel like home. This month, we introduce the story of Raha Nureen Nesa from Bangladesh.

"A Small Heart Found in Busan"

I came to Busan as a student at Dong-Eui University, expecting only classes and a busy life. But Busan gave me so much more -- it gave me a second home.

One of the first things I noticed was the kindness of people. Even though most didn't speak my language, they still tried their best to help when I was lost or confused. One day on the subway, an ajusshi who spoke good English said to me, "You're really a brave girl -- living far from your family and doing everything alone." That moment made me realize just how strong I had become, and his words have stayed with me ever since.

During those early months, I lived in a small goshiwon -- a tiny, budget-friendly room. On my walks to university, I often passed a pet shop that cared for animals while their owners were away. I used to stop and watch them. Somehow, I felt like them -- far from home, a little lonely. I wished I could work there, just to make them feel less alone, the way I hoped someone would for me.

But not every day was lonely. In Busan, I also found my favorite person -- my partner. We shared quiet walks on Haeundae Beach, watched the sunset at the Nakdong River, and talked under many versions of the moon while listening to the soft sound of the sea. Busan became our shared memory book -- filled with laughter, late-night walks, and comfort on the hardest days.

My favorite season is spring. Even when I felt down, the cherry blossoms lifted me. Their soft petals felt like gentle encouragement.

There's a line you see everywhere: "Busan is good." But for me, Busan is not just good -- it's where I found my peace, strength, and love.
