아니(Ani), 근데(Geundae)
In Korean, certain words change meaning depending on how they are used in speech. Mastering how to deploy these words will increase your Korean fluency.
① Ani (아니)
"Ani" (아니) is the casual form of "no." However, if said at the beginning of a sentence, its meaning is closer to the English expression "you know."
Used this way, speakers can say "ani" to get listeners' attention.
② Geundae (근데)
"Geundae" means "but." However, in spoken Korean, "geundae" works similarly to the expression "by the way." Speakers will say "geundae" to add a side note to the conversation, to express a sudden realization, or to change the subject.
