Busan continues its rise as a global innovation hub, ranking 8th worldwide

In the 12th edition of the Smart Centres Index, published in December by British consultancy Z/YEN, Busan ranked 8th among 77 major cities worldwide. In the Asia-Pacific region, it placed second for the third consecutive time, firmly establishing itself as a top-tier smart city.
The Smart Centres Index assesses technology and innovation capacity in global financial and commercial hubs, examining areas such as science, energy systems, machine learning and related applications. The index aims to deepen understanding of science and technology policy, regulation and implementation. High-ranking centres typically combine strong STEM-focused universities with robust regulatory frameworks and well-developed commercial and financial services. The index began in July 2020 and is published twice a year.
Busan recorded a strong overall performance, ranking within the global top 15 across six categories. It placed 11th in Technology, 10th in Business Environment, 9th in Human Capital, 9th in Infrastructure, 8th in Financial Sector Development and 10th in Reputation. Notably, its standings in Advanced Technology, Financial Support and Reputation improved from the previous edition.
Busan also ranked first globally in Innovation Support, one of the three core dimensions of the SCI. It placed 12th in Creative Intensity and 13th in Delivery Capability, reflecting balanced strengths across innovation, creativity and execution.
City officials credited Busan's consistent rise to sustained investment and strategic planning, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the city as a world-class innovation hub and a highly livable global city.

영국 컨설팅업체 지옌(Z/YEN)이 지난해 12월 발표한 제12회 스마트 센터 지수(Smart Centres Index)에 따르면, 부산은 전 세계 77개 주요 도시 가운데 8위를 기록했다. 아시아·태평양 지역에서는 3회 연속 2위를 차지하며 최상위 스마트 도시로서의 입지를 확고히 했다.
스마트 센터 지수는 글로벌 금융·상업 중심지를 대상으로 기술 및 혁신 역량을 평가하는 지표로, 과학, 에너지 시스템, 머신러닝 및 관련 응용 분야 등을 종합적으로 살핀다. 이 지수는 과학기술 정책과 규제, 실행에 대한 이해를 높이는 것을 목표로 하며, 상위권 도시는 대체로 STEM(과학·기술·공학·수학) 중심의 우수한 대학, 견고한 규제 체계, 발달된 상업·금융 서비스를 갖춘 것이 특징이다. 해당 지수는 2020년 7월 처음 도입돼 연 2회 발표되고 있다.
부산은 6개 세부 분야에서 모두 글로벌 상위 15위권에 들며 전반적으로 우수한 성과를 거뒀다. 기술 부문 11위, 비즈니스 환경 10위, 인적 자본 9위, 인프라 9위, 금융 부문 발전도 8위, 평판 10위를 기록했다. 특히 첨단 기술, 금융 지원, 평판 부문에서는 직전 조사 대비 순위가 상승했다.
또한 스마트 센터 지수의 3대 핵심 지표 가운데 하나인 ‘혁신 지원(Innovation Support)’ 부문에서는 세계 1위를 차지했다. 창의성 강도(Creative Intensity)는 12위, 실행 역량(Delivery Capability)은 13위로, 혁신과 창의성, 실행력 전반에서 균형 잡힌 경쟁력을 입증했다.
부산시는 이러한 지속적인 상승세를 꾸준한 투자와 전략적 도시 운영의 성과로 평가하며, 세계적 수준의 혁신 허브이자 살기 좋은 글로벌 도시로 도약하기 위한 노력을 계속해 나가겠다고 밝혔다.
