Busan marks three years of steady progress

Since 2022, Busan's current administration has driven three years of steady growth, focusing on global competitiveness and improving citizens' quality of life. Major strides in infrastructure, investment and long-stalled civic projects have led to continued progress.
The city's global profile is also rising, fueled by strong investment, improved international rankings and a thriving business and tourism climate. Busan is attracting top domestic and global firms in mobility, semiconductors, energy and shipbuilding, with investment reaching a record 14 trillion won. This boom has boosted job creation, pushing youth employment to 46.7% in Q3 of 2024, an all-time high.
Global rankings reflect Busan's momentum. The city placed 12th in Z/Yen's 2025 Smart Centres Index and climbed to 24th in the Global Financial Centres Index. Busan also ranked among the top 20 Asian cities in Startup Genome's 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, thanks to robust support for entrepreneurs.
Tourism is another bright spot. Busan was named one of Trip.com's Top 100 Global Travel Destinations in 2024 and ranked second in tourist satisfaction among eight major Northeast Asian cities. Cultural infrastructure is growing, with the new Busan Concert Hall and numerous sites featured in national tourism campaigns.
Longstanding challenges are being addressed, including the construction of new bridges in western Busan and the redevelopment of Suyeongman Bay Yacht Center.
In a major policy change, development restrictions on 16.5 million square meters of land have been lifted, opening new opportunities for Busan's next phase of growth.
In July, the World Design Organization named Busan the 2028 World Design Capital － a title awarded biennially to cities that utilize design as a tool to enhance economic, social, cultural, and environmental quality of life.
Looking ahead, Busan will host two major international events in 2026: The UNESCO World Heritage Committee and the World Library and Information Congress. This marks the first time that Korea will host the World Heritage Committee, making Busan's selection a historic milestone.

부산시, 3년간의 지속적 성과 이어가 2022년 출범한 민선 8기 부산시가 글로벌 경쟁력 강화와 시민 삶의 질 향상을 핵심 목표로 3년간 안정적인 성장을 이끌어왔다. 인프라 확충과 투자 유치, 장기 지연된 시민 숙원사업의 가시적 성과를 통해 시정 전반에 걸쳐 지속적인 발전이 이뤄지고 있다. 부산의 글로벌 위상도 빠르게 높아지고 있다. 활발한 투자와 국제 지표 순위 상승, 그리고 기업 및 관광 활력에 힘입어 글로벌 도시로서의 면모를 강화하고 있다. 특히 모빌리티, 반도체, 에너지, 조선 등 전략 산업 분야에서 국내외 유수 기업들의 투자가 활발히 이어지고 있으며, 총 투자액은 역대 최고 수준인 14조 원에 달했다. 이 같은 투자 확대는 청년 고용률 상승으로도 이어져, 2024년 3분기에는 46.7%를 기록하며 사상 최고치를 경신했다. 글로벌 평가기관의 순위에서도 부산의 성장세가 확인된다. 부산은 Z/Yen이 발표한 ‘2025 스마트 센터 지수’에서 12위를 차지했으며, ‘글로벌 금융센터 지수’에서는 24위로 올라섰다. 스타트업 지놈의 ‘2024 글로벌 스타트업 생태계 보고서’에서도 아시아 도시 중 상위 20위권에 이름을 올리며 창업 친화 도시로서의 입지를 강화했다. 관광 분야 역시 눈에 띄는 성과를 거두고 있다. 부산은 2024년 트립닷컴이 선정한 ‘세계 100대 여행지’에 포함됐으며, 동북아 8대 도시 중 관광 만족도 2위를 기록했다. 부산콘서트홀 개관 등 문화 인프라가 확충되고, 주요 관광지들이 국가 관광 캠페인에 잇달아 소개되며 관광 기반도 더욱 탄탄해지고 있다. 서부산권 교량 건설, 수영만 요트경기장 재개발 등 오랜 숙원사업들도 단계적으로 추진되며 지역 균형 발전의 기반을 마련하고 있다. 특히, 최근 1,650만㎡ 규모의 개발제한구역이 해제되면서 부산의 미래 성장을 위한 새로운 공간과 기회가 열리고 있다. 지난 7월, 세계디자인기구는 디자인을 경제, 사회, 문화, 환경적 삶의 질을 높이는 도구로 활용하는 도시에 격년으로 수여하는 2028년 세계디자인수도로 부산을 선정했다. 앞으로 부산은 2026년에 유네스코 세계유산위원회와 세계도서관정보총회라는 두 개의 주요 국제 행사를 개최할 예정이다. 한국이 세계유산위원회를 개최하는 것은 이번이 처음으로, 부산의 개최지 선정은 역사적인 이정표가 될 전망이다. |
