Daily Busan
A conversation with entrepreneur Gabrielle Atmajaya
After graduating from Kyungsung University, Gabrielle Atmajaya founded Intuition, an education consultancy.
Ms. Atmajaya sat down with Daily Busan to discuss her life in Busan and her experience starting and operating Intuition.
Q. Please introduce yourself to Daily Busan subscribers.
My name is Gabrielle, and I'm from Indonesia. I came here in February 2013 and graduated from Kyungsung University. I’m currently running Intuition, an education consultancy.
Q. Do you like living in Busan?
I love it. That's probably why I haven’t left. I have a sister in Seoul, so we thought maybe we could live together up there, but I didn't go. I stayed in Busan. I cannot leave Gwangalli, it’s my favorite place in Busan. I can just go walk by the beach in the middle of the afternoon, which I love.
If I want a change of scenery, I can go for a hike up Geumnyeonsan, which is behind my house. I consider myself very lucky to live in Gwangalli.
Q. Tell me about Intuition.
Intuition started two years ago, in 2023. We recruit students for universities, mostly undergrads but sometimes graduate students.
Most of our students are from South Asia. Sometimes, students find me directly through Instagram or Facebook. They might be trying to get scholarships, so we work together. I review their documents and essays, or if they need to contact a professor, I come in the middle and contact the universities on their behalf.
We also have training sessions with students, like practicing for interviews.
I was working for a similar business before as an educational consultant, but it was for only one university. I didn't like how they did things over there, so I quit and started my firm.
Q. Just as you're living in Busan, the city is attracting more and more foreign residents. Do you have any ideas for making Busan more global?
I think Busan is actually doing very well, especially compared to other cities. I pay closer attention to the education sector, like issues affecting international students.
I know Busan is doing all these English campaigns, such as publishing the Busan is Good newspaper for free. That's a very good approach. I don’t think many people know about it yet, so I'm pretty sure a lot of students, if they knew, would subscribe to it.
