Busan Metropolitan City has won two Green World Awards in the Carbon Reduction category for the Our Neighborhood ESG Center program and the Eulsukdo Ecosystem Restoration Project.

The awards are issued by the U.K.-based Green Organisation, an international, independent, non-political, non-profit environment group that began in 1994, dedicated to recognizing, rewarding and promoting environmental best practices around the world.

The official Green World Awards 2025 ceremony will occur in Auckland, New Zealand, on May 12.

This marks Busan’s first Green World Award, while other authorities in Korea have received awards in previous years, including the Korea Airports Corporation, the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, the environmental organization Daejayon and the Seocho-gu District Office in Seoul.

One of the two policies for which Busan received the awards is the Our Neighborhood ESG Center program, which features older adults participating in the process of recycling and upcycling recyclable materials.

The Green World Awards recognized the innovative approach of leveraging the “silver workforce” for sustainability. This initiative contributes to creating a virtuous circle for resources that are no longer in use while also reinvigorating the spirit of the local community. The program also includes older adults teaching children the importance of protecting nature and building environmental awareness.

The second award-winning initiative is the Eulsukdo Ecosystem Restoration Project, which is dedicated to restoring and protecting Eulsukdo Island as a haven for wildlife. The project has helped turn Eulsukdo Island into a refuge for migratory birds and has established measures to protect flora and fauna at risk of extinction.

The Eulsukdo Ecosystem Restoration Project has laid the foundation for a sustainable future where humans and nature can harmoniously coexist, pointing Busan in the ultimate direction it should pursue for generations to come.

These two policies from Busan City will be featured in the Green Book – a publication that includes examples of environmental best practices from winners of the Green World Awards. Through this book, others worldwide can learn from the experiences of the winners and follow their lead to benefit themselves and the environment.
