The 2026 Busan Wheat Festival will take place this weekend, from May 9 to 10, at Hwamyeong Eco Park.

This year’s festival invites all to the “Kingdom of Wheattopia,” a magical land where wheat is celebrated for saving people from hunger. While wheat’s value is protected by devoted “Wheat Guardians,” a new movement has emerged, the “Secret Society.” This group claims the world has more to offer than just wheat and advocates for alternative ingredients.

Visitors can join this battle of tastes by enjoying wheat-based and non-wheat dishes and participating in various activities.

The event centers around two main areas: the Food Lounge at the Hwamyeong Auto Campground and the Wheattopia Experience Zone in the Lotus Pond Area.

■ Food Lounge: Under the name of “Gourmet Treaty Zone,” this unified food and beverage lounge offers a wide array of wheat-based and non-wheat dishes. Featuring 25 iconic establishments, from Michelin-listed restaurants to beloved local favorites, this area showcases a high-quality culinary selection. Highlights include Cor Pasta Bar, known for its premium in-house pasta, and Pyeongyangjip, which serves North Korean-style “nokdujeon,” or mung bean pancakes. Visitors can also savor Hong Kong-style boneless fried pork hocks from Ultrabite, chimichangas from Taco Sounds Club, and sophisticated pastries from Ancien.

To add a lively after-dark charm, the lounge has newly introduced the Pairing Night program this year. This specialized nighttime session runs from 6 to 10 p.m., allowing visitors to enjoy a variety of gourmet foods paired with alcoholic beverages in a festive atmosphere.

■  Wheattopia Experience Zone: Based on the festival’s creative theme, this area is divided into three districts:

The “Wheat Guardian District” features engaging activities such as a market, wheat-straw hat making, and pizza-making workshops.

The “Secret Society District” offers an exploration of alternative crops. Along with vegan and gluten-free markets, visitors can participate in baking programs specifically focusing on rice.

The “Neutral Zone” is a communal space where visitors enter Wheattopia. After choosing a side between the Wheat Guardians and the Secret Society, participants can complete various missions to earn stickers for a lucky draw.

Beyond celebrating the historic significance of the Gupo neighborhood in Buk-gu District, once a major hub for wheat collection and distribution after the Korean War, this festival serves as a perfect May outing filled with fun and flavor.
