하룬 미르자(1977- )는 전기라는 물질성을 시청각화함으로써 전기 기반 기술 메커니즘이 예술의 존재 방식을 어떻게 변화시켰는지 보여준다. 그의 작품을 구성하는 중심 재료인 태양광 패널은 작품의 시각적 형태를 결정짓는 에너지원이자 조각적 요소로 기능하며, 탄소 중심 시대 미래의 태양이 가질 기술적이고 상징적인 위상, 나아가 기후위기, 에너지 기술, 인간 사이에 내재하는 복잡다단한 정치적 위계 관계를 암시한다.
〈태양_코르브 B〉(2014)는 태양 전지판, 빛, 그리고 소리가 결합된 조각 설치 작품으로, 작품의 구동을 위해 인공 빛을 생산하고 공급하는 보조 조명이 함께 설치된다. 본래 전기가 들어오지 않는 공간에서 자연 발생적인 태양광을 이용해 작동되어야 하는 작품이지만, 자연광이 충분하지 못한 전시 장소의 특성상 인위적인 전기 공급이 필수적으로 수반될 때 작품은 비로소 작동한다. 시적이면서 과학적이고 기술적인 연구 과정의 산물로서 그의 작품은 기술적으로 환경 문제를 다루는 것이 얼마나 까다로운 것인지를 보여주는 한편, 자연이 제공하는 무한한 에너지를 가시화하고 인류학적 관점에서 태양 에너지를 바라보며 인간에게 요구되는 자연 숭배 의식을 강조한다. 달리 말하자면, 이것은 기술 진보에 대한 인간의 비이성적인 집착과 자만심, 기술 발전의 양면성에 대한 비판이자 기후위기시대 신재생 에너지 문제를 사유하는 인간에게 던지는 철학적 질문이기도 하다.
Haroon Mirza (1977- ) showcases how technology can influence artistic expression by manipulating the volatile nature of electricity. Particularly, solar panels, a central material in his works, function as both the energy source determining the visual form of the artwork and as sculptural elements. These panels represent the technological and symbolic aspects of future solar energy in the carbon-centric era, alluding to the complex political hierarchies inherent within the climate crisis, energy technologies, and humanity.
Solar_Corbs B (2014) combines solar panels, light, and sound to create a sculptural installation. An auxiliary device is needed to produce and supply artificial light to drive the artwork. Although the piece would ideally operate using naturally occurring solar energy, the necessity to generate and supply electricity artificially arises due to insufficient natural light in the exhibition space. Mirza‘s work, a product of poetic, scientific, and technological research processes, illustrates the complexity of addressing environmental issues through technology and visualizes the infinite natural energy offered by the Sun; emphasizing, from an anthropological perspective, the reverence and admiration with which humanity should approach nature and solar energy. In other words, his work serves as a critique of the irrational obsession and hubris humans harbor towards technological advancement, revealing the double-edged sword of progress, and posing a philosophical question to humanity as we contemplate new forms of renewable energy in response to the climate crisis era.
