송호준(1978- )은 천문학적 자본이 필요한 강대국의 전유물이었던 우주 산업에 비판의식을 가지고, 개인, 민간 차원에서의 인공위성 프로젝트를 추진하며 그 설계도를 누구나 접근할 수 있도록 공개하는 오픈 소스 메이커 운동 전개한 작가이다.
〈인류를 위하여 방구 끼지마〉(2023)는 2021년 환경 캠페인 일환으로 제작된 게임 〈방구를 참아라〉(2021)의 후속 버전이다. 전작 〈방구를 참아라〉는 뉴질랜드 정부가 축산업에서 발생하는 메탄가스 발생을 줄이고자 양과 소의 트림세, 방구세를 도입한 사건을 계기로 제작되었는데, 이 게임의 시나리오는 환경 파괴의 주범은 인간이고, 기후위기를 인간이 방구를 참아서 해결하자고 제안한다. 〈인류를 위하여 방구 끼지마〉는 단위 시간당 가장 많은 이산화탄소를 배출하지만 우주 탐험과 새로운 삶의 터전 개척이라는 미명으로 환경 파괴의 비난을 면하는 우주 산업을 방구에 빗대어 이야기한다. 게임은 역사적으로 모든 환경 파괴가 인류의 번영을 위한다는 명분 아래 이루어졌음을 코믹하게 보여준다.
퍼포먼스 기록 영상 작품 〈미역 그래피티〉(2022)는 자연산 미역을 채취하여 미역의 포자를 전 세계에 퍼트리려는 예술 환경 단체를 상정하며, 보잘 것 없다고 여겨진 해조류를 통해 미래식량, 기후위기, 탈식민, 그리고 디아스포라와 같은 여러 국제사회의 이슈를 다룬다. 영상 속에서 미역의 포자는 바다의 흐름에 맡겨져 떠내려가다 정착할 뿐이다. 미역은 한국에서는 생명 탄생과 함께하는 중요한 음식이지만, 세계적으로 가장 침략적인 외래종으로 분류되었다. 또 해조류가 아마존 숲보다 더 많은 이산화탄소를 감소시키지만, 많은 국제기구들은 이 사실을 공식적으로 인정하지 않고 있다.
Critical of the space industry as a domain requiring astronomical amounts of capital and dominated by powerful nations, Song Hojun (1978- ) initiated a satellite project on a personal and private level, pioneering the open-source and maker movements by allowing the blueprints to be accessible to everyone.
His new work, No Fart For Humanity (2023), is a sequel to the game Hold Your Fart (2021) created as part of an environmental campaign in 2021. The game, Hold Your Fart, was inspired by a somewhat comical proposal to tax the burps and farts of livestock in New Zealand to reduce methane emissions from the agricultural industry. The scenario of the game explains that humans are responsible for environmental degradation, proposing that solving the climate crisis will require humans to hold in their farts. No Fart For Humanity metaphorically likens the space industry, which avoid criticism over environmental damage under the pretext of the value of space exploration and the potential colonization of new territories, despite emitting the most carbon dioxide per unit of time, to methane released in farts. The game comically highlights the historical pattern of justifying environmental destruction for the sake of human prosperity.
The documentary video of performance artwork Miyeok Graffiti (2022) envisions an art and environmental organization that collects natural seaweed (miyeok) and disperses the spores worldwide. Through the seemingly inconsequential seaweed, the artwork addresses international issues such as future food supply, the climate crisis, decolonization, and diasporas. In the video, miyeok spores are released into the ocean‘s currents and carried away to settle elsewhere. While miyeok is a crucial part of Korean cuisine, symbolizing the birth of life, it is categorized as one of the most invasive alien species globally. However, seaweed is capable of sequestering more carbon dioxide than the entire Amazon Rainforest, despite many international organizations not having officially acknowledged this fact.
