#25. 리슨투더시티 Listen to the City
리슨투더시티(2009- )는 공동의 소유로서 공공재 문제를 성찰하며 예술과 비예술을 구분하기보다 다양한 장르와 접목하며 사회에 필요한 사회운동을 조직하고 이를 예술 형식으로 생산해 낸다.
〈을숙도 하구 단면도〉(2023)은 미술관이 위치한 을숙도 일대, 가덕도, 김해, 대저 지역을 중심으로 낙동강 하류 지역에 서식하는 50여 종의 새들을 벽화 형식으로 기록한 작품이다. 해당 지역은 4대강 사업의 마지막 종착지이기도 한데, 계속되는 개발 사업으로 수년 사이 도시의 풍경이 변한만큼 조류 개체의 다양성도 변화했다. 을숙도를 중심으로 도시와 도시를 가로지르는 수많은 대교는 을숙도 대표 서식 종인 고니의 착륙을 어렵게 만들었다. 또 “에코”는 인간주의 관점에서 자연 친화적인 도시 개발을 용인하는 개념이 되었고, 그러면서도 천혜의 자연과의 조우라는 이상적인 경험을 판매하는 관광 상품이 되었다.
강제로 뿌리 뽑히고 식재되는 식물과 거주지를 빼앗긴 새들의 지역적 재배치는 재개발 지역에서 강제 이주를 당하는 이들과 겹쳐진다. 리슨투더시티는 성장 중심의 발전주의에 초점을 둔 개발 정책이 인간 사회는 물론, 생태계 전반에 초래하는 변화에 대해 질문을 던지며, 국가와 자본이 자연을 착취의 대상으로 간주하는 행위, 권력 중심적 환경 운동의 폐단을 첨예하게 비판하는 것을 넘어서, 재난 현장에 직접 개입해 들어간다.
Listen to the City (2009- ) is concerned with the issue of public goods as shared ownership, and organize the social movements they believe are needed in society, whilst blending various methods and genres rather than maintaining strict distinctions between art and non-art.
A Cross-Section of Eulsukdo (2023) is a record of the birds inhabiting the downstream area of the Nakdong River, around Eulsuk Island (where the museum is located), Gadeok Island, Gimhae, and Daejeo, detailed in the form of murals. This region underwent massive upheaval during the final stages of the Four Rivers Project, and as the urban landscape over the years has changed, due to seemingly endless development, the diversity of avian populations has also plummeted. Numerous bridges that cross between the neighborhoods around Eulsuk Island, have made it impossible for Bewick’s swans, once common here, to land. The concept of ‘eco’ has become a justification for the process of developing nature-friendly cities but from a human-centered perspective, turning them into tourist products selling idealized experiences of remarkable encounters with nature.
The relocation of uprooted plants and the birds thus deprived of their habitats is reminiscent of the displacement of people in redevelopment areas. In this regard, Listen to the City raise questions about how development policies centered on growth affect not only human society but also the entire ecosystem. Going beyond sharp criticism of the actions of the nation and big business in their exploitation of nature, and the exposure of the limitations of power-centered environmental movements, they directly engage in disaster-stricken areas.
