#20. 배드 뉴 데이즈 Bad New Days
배드 뉴 데이즈(2017- )는 역사 감각을 잃어버린 동시대 미술에 대한 비판적 개입을 염두에 둔 작가들의 공동체로, 동시대라는 현재의 시간성의 실체를 탐구하는 다양한 비평과 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다.
〈검은 육각형〉(2023)은 웨더노믹스, 기후위기 테마주, 탄소세 등에 관한 비판적 리서치를 토대로 기후위기와 금융 자본주의의 관계를 조망한다. 작품은 총체적으로 파악할 수 없는 네트워트들이 복합적으로 얽힌 기후위기 이슈에 접근하기 위해 “육각형” 개념을 미끼로 삼는다. 육각형 스크린에는 탄소 배출 문제에서 녹아내리는 빙하, 친환경 신소재 개발, 맨더빌(Bernard Mandeville, 1670-1733)의 『꿀벌의 우화』(1714) 등에 이르기까지 기후변화를 둘러싸고 일어나는 다양한 사건과 물질들을 엮어 나간다. 플라스틱 수지가 육각형의 틀을 채우는 동안 탄소 이슈가 흘러나오고, 스노우 파우더가 육각형의 틀을 채우는 동안에 인공 눈으로 만들어진 스키장 일화가 흘러나온다. 또 녹아내린 빙하 아래에서 모습을 드러낸 러시아 영구동토층은 새로운 금융 파생 상품이 된다. 이처럼 오늘날 자본주의에는 검은 사각형이 아닌 검은 육각형이 배회한다. 스크린에서 떨어져 나온 육각형 오브제는 비가시화된 전자의 이야기들이 재현되는 방식이자 자본주의 안에서 기후위기가 작동하는 방식이기도 하다..
Bad New Days (2017- ), a community of artists advocating a critical intervention in contemporary art, which has lost its sense of history, explore the nature of contemporary times.
Black Hexagon (2023) is an examination of the relationship between the climate crisis and financial capitalism, focusing on research in weathernomics, climate crisis related stocks, carbon taxes, and more. The artwork employs the concept of the “hexagon” as a means to approach climate crisis issues so intricately and unintelligibly complex and intertwined that they cannot easily be envisaged. The hexagonal screen weaves together various events and materials related to climate change, ranging from carbon emissions and melting glaciers to developments in eco-friendly materials and excerpts from Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733)’s The Fable of the Bees (1714). As a hexagonal mold is filled with plastic resin, a narrator explains the discovery of the hexagonal structure of benzene which led to the development of plastics. As snow powder fills the hexagon, we hear a promotion for an artificial ski resort. The exposed permafrost in Russia, revealed beneath the melting glaciers, leads to new financial derivatives. In contemporary capitalism, not the black square but the black hexagon wanders. Hexagonal objets d’art which seem to have emerged from the screen are visual representations both of the hidden stories described above and the mode in which the climate crisis operates within capitalism.
