#15. 장영혜중공업 YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES
장영혜중공업(1998- )은 장영혜, 마크 보주로 구성된 다국적 콜렉티브 그룹으로, 인터넷 팝업창을 연상시키는 간결한 텍스트와 강렬한 비트의 음악을 재료 삼아 웹 기반 영상 설치 작품을 통해 국제적 대기업이 점유한 오늘날 자본주의 사회, 그에 투영된 인간 욕망의 이중성을 직설적으로 들춰내며 한국 사회를 비판적으로 조명하는 작업을 지속해왔다.
〈해운대의 쓰레기〉(2023)는 대량 소비와 개발 논리, 부르주아적 삶의 양식이 우선시되는 현실 속에서 기후위기를 극복할 수 있는 대상으로 광고하며 탈탄소 사회로의 전환 가능성을 말하는, 상충하는 두 개의 이상이 공존하는 시대의 괴리감을 지적한다. 넓게는 더 이상 정치적 사유와 행동이 작동하지 않는 시대를 살아가는 우리 자신을 들여다보고, 좁게는 현재 미술계와 시민들이 지금의 기후변화를 마주하는 양면적인 태도를 반성하고 재인식하며 싸우기를 촉구하는 일종의 탄원서 형식의 작품이다.
총 7개의 에피소드로 구성된 영상 설치 작품 〈삼성의 뜻은 재탄생〉(2021)은 삼성이라는 실재하는 한국의 거대 기업을 표상 삼아 인간 삶에 막대한 영향을 끼치는 자본주의의 물질 순환과 그 근원에 자리한 권력 착취 구조를 비판한다. 작품 속에 등장하는 여성의 직업은 주부로 설정되어 있고, 그녀는 가상의 인물 삼성과 대화를 이어 나가며 삼성을 친밀감을 형성할 수 있는 존재로 상정함으로써 자신의 욕망을 투사한다. 이 관계 설정에는 사물이 사용 가치를 넘어 욕망과 쾌락의 대상으로 전락하게 된 현대 자본주의적 삶의 양식, 그리고 이 삶의 양식을 결정짓는 대기업의 상업주의 논리가 함축되어 있다. 자본주의에 길들여진 인간 욕망과 위기의 순간을 발판 삼아 새롭게 “재탄생”하는 자본주의의 역사적 변화는 기후위기시대에도 계속된다.
YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES (1998- ) is a multinational collective consisting of Young-hae Chang and Marc Voge. Through web-based video installation works, using concise texts reminiscent of internet pop-up windows and music with intense beats as materials, they criticize Korean society by directly exposing the duality of human desires projected onto today‘s capitalist society dominated by international conglomerates.
Their latest work, THE GARBAGE ON THE HAE-UNDAE (2023), critiques the paradoxical coexistence of two conflicting ideals in today‘s society, where overcoming climate change is advertised as an achievable goal, yet mass consumption, development logic, and bourgeois lifestyles remain the priority, and undermine the likelihood of a transition to a decarbonized society. Broadly, the piece reflects upon our own existence in an era in which political reasoning and action seem ineffective, while more narrowly, prompting self-reflection over the dual attitudes of the contemporary art scene and citizens towards the current climate crisis, the need for reevaluation, and acting as a petition for change.
SAMSUNG MEANS TO REBIRTH (2021) is a video installation work consisting of seven episodes. Symbolizing the actual Korean conglomerate, Samsung, the artwork describes the material circulation of capitalism, which has a significant influence on human life, and its underlying structure of the exploitation of power. The occupation of the female character in the work is a housewife, and she projects her desires onto a virtual character, named Samsung, engaging in conversations and imagining an intimate connection. This relationship setup embodies the contemporary mode of life under late capitalism, where objects have degenerated into the targets of desires and pleasures, and the commercialism of dominant corporations that shape this form of life. Even in the era of climate crisis, the historical transformation of capitalism, referred to as “To Rebirth,” continues based on human desires governed by capitalism and moments of crisis.
