#10. 토폴로지컬 아틀라스 Topological Atlas
토폴로지컬 아틀라스(2018- )는 파키스탄, 인도 및 튀르키예의 예술가, 건축가, 사회과학자 및 활동가로 구성된 연구 및 행동주의 공동체이다. 튀르키예 남동부를 중심으로 연대와 돌봄, 노동과 관련된 인프라, 남반구의 자원 추출 및 착취, 강제 이주에 관한 시각적 서사 생산을 통해 사람들을 불안한 삶 속으로 이행해 들어가도록 하는 정치-군사화된 경계들을 계속해서 탐구한다.
〈손뜨개 카펫〉(2022)을 중심으로 〈정글〉(2022), 〈조각 지구본 잡지〉(2022)로 이어지는 세 작품은 파키스탄과 이란, 이란과 터키의 국경지대에서 기록되지 않은 난민의 불법 이주에 대한 5년간의 조사 연구를 토대로 제작된 것이다. 이들은 영토를 강제 이주 체제와 불안정한 삶, 정치적으로 군사화된 국경지대들에 의해 사람들을 끊임없이 움직이도록 설계된 순환 시스템으로 바라본다.
〈손뜨개 카펫〉은 수 세기 동안 전해 내려온 이란 지역의 공예 전통과 서사에 주목하는 작품으로 지역 공동체와 협업해 제작되었다. 이 지역 카펫의 가장자리는 악령을 막아주는 기능을 하지만, 이 작품의 가장자리는 아직 다 짜이지 않은 미완성의 상태로 남아 있는데, 이는 이들의 희망 없는 고단한 여정의 서사를 반영한다.
〈정글〉과 〈조각 지구본 잡지〉는 지구본 위에 다양한 지역들과 사람들의 사진을 조각조각 붙여 하나의 이미지로 구성한다. 작가는 이 재현 방식을 가리켜 “대안적 아틀라스”라 부르는데, 이는 디지털 기술을 통해 시각성의 한계뿐만 아니라, 우리를 다양하게 위치 짓는 방식의 한계를 다룰 수 있는 복합적인 이미지를 생산해 낸다. 결과적으로는 전혀 읽을 수 없는 비판적 지구본이 됨으로써 이동과 항해를 근원으로 하는 식민주의적 지도 제작 방식에 저항한다.
Topological Atlas (2018- ) are a research and activism community composed of artists, architects, social scientists, and activists from Pakistan, India, and Turkey. They examine politicized and militarized borders as cyclical systems, that draw people into lives of insecurity, through the production of visual narratives concerning solidarity, care, labor-related infrastructure, and displacement - centered around countries and regions to the south and east of Turkey - and resource extraction and exploitation in the Southern Hemisphere.
The three connected pieces, Jungle (2022), and Patchy Global Zine (2022), centered around Hand-Knotted Carpet (2022), are based on investigations and research over a five-year period into the migration of undocumented refugees across the borders of Pakistan and Iran, Iran and Turkey. The works focus on cyclical systems designed to keep people moving through displacement, instability, and politically militarized borders.
Hand-Knotted Carpet explores the craft traditions and narratives of Iran over several centuries, and was created in collaboration with local communities. In this region, the edges of carpets are believed to ward off evil spirits, but the edges of this artwork remain unfinished, reflecting the narrative of the hopeless and arduous journeys of refugees that have not yet been fully woven.
Jungle and Patchy Global Zine piece together photographs of various regions and people onto a globe, collectively creating a single image. Topological Atlas refer to this method of patchy representation as an “atlas otherwise.” The digital manipulation of these images challenges the limits of what we see and produces complex images which subvert conventional ways of positioning ourselves. Ultimately, these works resist colonial mapping methods which revolved around movement and navigation, creating a new, critical globe that is not meant to be “read” but rather experienced.
