#9. 아이 웨이웨이 Ai Weiwei
아이 웨이웨이(1957- )는 중국 당국에 저항한 반체제 미술가, 행동가로 알려져 있다. 그는 디자이너, 큐레이터, 시인, 블로거, 출판인, 건축가, 도시 계획가, 수집가 등 경계 없는 다양한 활동을 펼치며 예술의 개념을 확장해 나간다.
〈유랑하는 사람들〉(2017)은 아프가니스탄, 가자 지구 및 미국 멕시코 장벽, 기후변화로 이동해야 하는 아프리카 난민까지, 전 세계 20개국 이상 6,500만 명의 난민이 발생한 곳을 직접 방문하고 함께 생활하며 거대한 규모의 난민과 그들의 이주 문제를 기록한 장편 다큐멘터리 영상 작품이다. 드론 촬영으로 높은 각도에서 난민들의 이동 모습을 포착해내는 카메라의 움직임이 한눈에 담아내질 못할 규모의 난민 수용소를 멀리서 조망한다면, 작가의 카메라는 난민의 삶으로 들어가 그들이 처한 파국적 현실과 끝나지 않을 곤경을 담아낸다. 익사의 위험에서 가까스로 벗어난 난민들이 곧장 마주하게 되는 국제사회의 정치적 무관심이라는 새로운 위기는 우리에게 동시대 세계화가 강조하는 인류애, 자유, 연대, 개방성의 의미에 대해 반문하게 만든다.
Ai Weiwei (1957- ), known as a Chinese artist, dissident and activist who resists the Chinese government, expands the concept of art to acknowledge boundaries with his involvement across various fields as a designer, curator, poet, blogger, publisher, architect, urban planner, and collector.
Documentary feature film, Human Flow (2017), records the unimaginably massive scale of the global refugee crisis, documenting the displacement issues of 6,500 refugees from over 20 countries worldwide which Weiwei has personally visited or lived in, including Afghanistan, the Gaza Strip, and the US-Mexican border, as well as African refugees forced to migrate due to climate change. Using drones from above to capture images of the movements of refugees and gaze over the vastness of the refugee camps sprawling into the distance on a scale hard to capture in a single shot, the artist also takes his own camera into the lives of refugees, capturing the dire reality of their endless struggles. Refugees who only narrowly escape the risk of drowning must then face the next crisis, that of an international political indifference which challenges the emphasis of contemporary globalism on humanity, freedom, solidarity, and openness, and causes us to question the real meaning of such values.
