#6. 강신대 Kang Sindae
강신대(1988- )는 페이스북, 트위터, 유튜브 등 우리에게 익숙한 시청각 미디어의 언어로 사회적 재난 같은 모순이 반복적으로 재현되는 방식을 이미지화하며, 동시대라는 시간성의 특성을 탐구해왔다.
〈풍경 연구 S#1〉(2023)는 오늘날 예술이 과연 기후위기라는 만성적 비상사태와 행성 차원의 위기를 재현해 낼 수 있는가를 질문하며, 우리 앞에 놓인 기후위기시대의 풍경을 시각화하려 시도한다. 세 개의 채널로 이어지는 영상에는 공장이 늘어선 강변을 배경으로 제자리 걷기 행위를 반복하는 한 인물이 등장한다. 보이지 않는 워킹 머신 위에 올라 걷기를 반복하는 이 인물은 우리의 시선에서 한 걸음도 멀어지지 않고, 우리에게 계속해 되돌아오는 같은 풍경만을 마주하게 한다.
오늘날 자본주의 상품은 그 어느 때보다 구체적인 생태 환경적 이야기와 이미지를 생산하고, 생태 환경적 소비를 통해 우리가 기후변화를 해결하고 극복하는 데 일조할 수 있다고 설파한다. 그러나 이때 생태 환경적 행위는 다시금 자본주의라는 컨베이어 벨트의 동력이 되고, 오늘의 풍경만이 반복되도록 추동할 뿐이다. 여기에는 자본의 운동을 멈추지 않은 채 자연의 변화 가능성을 논한다면, 우리가 마주하게 될 내일의 풍경은 결코 오늘의 풍경과 다르지 않을 것이라는 역설이 잠재되어 있다.
Kang Sindae (1988- ) explores contemporary concepts of time through visual representations of contradictions that could potentially lead to societal collapse and the current language of familiar social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
Landscape Study S#1 (2023) questions whether art today can truly represent the chronic state of emergency and the planetary scale of the climate crisis and attempts to visualize the actual terrain of the climate crisis era which we face. In the three-channel video, an individual appears, repeatedly walking in place against a backdrop of factories lining a riverside. This person, continuously walking on an invisible treadmill, never strays from our gaze, and we find ourselves confronted by the same landscapes that keep on repeating.
Today‘s capitalism claims that the marketing of commodities can weave more intricate and nuanced ecological narratives and images than ever before, and will thus contribute to easing and overcoming climate change through environmentally conscious consumption. However, in this context, environmental action once again becomes a driving force for the conveyor belt of capitalism, merely propelling a repetition of today’s landscape. Here lies the paradox; if we discuss the possibility of change while pursuing only the potential of nature in terms of capitalism rather than what is best for nature itself, without halting the movement of capital, the future landscape we will face is unlikely to be much different from that of today.
