#5. 요코 오노 Yoko Ono
요코 오노(1933- )는 제2차 세계대전 중 도쿄에서 뉴욕으로 이주한 이후 하늘과 관련된 다양한 작품을 제작해왔다. 작가는 아무도 소유할 수 없는 모두의 것으로서 하늘이 정치적, 사회적, 경제적, 군사적 이유로 분배되고 사유화되는 것을 비판적으로 성찰한다.
〈하늘을 보기 위한 구멍〉(1971)은 엽서에 뚫린 작은 구멍을 통해 하늘을 볼 수 있도록 함으로써 우리가 하늘을 감각하고 경험하는 새로운 방법을 제안한다. 또한 짧은 지시문 작품 〈하늘을 보기 위한 회화〉(1961)에는 작가가 제안하는 하늘을 보는 여러 방법들 중 하나가 기술되어 있다. 이 일련의 작품들은 학술적이기보다 시적 방법론을 통해 세상을 조금 다른 방식으로 바라보고 상상할 수 있게 한다.
폐쇄회로 비디오 조각 작품 〈하늘 TV〉(1966/2023)는 오로지 하늘을 보기 위한 수단으로 현대 통신 기술을 사용한다. 하늘의 다양한 모습을 통합해 보여주려는 시도는 전 세계 모든 사람이 하늘을 바라볼 수 있도록 연결함으로써 외부적인 힘과는 무관하게 언제나 이곳에 존재하는 공간으로서 하늘을 의미한다.
〈사랑해 지구야〉(2023)는 아티스트 캠페인 프로젝트로, “I LOVE YOU EARTH”는 지구 행성을 향한 사랑의 노래이자 동시에 인간과 지구가 맺고 있는 관계를 질문하는 것이기도 하다. 지구의 날을 기념하기 위해 공공미술 작품으로 번안된 이 작품은 2017년 미국 플로리다주, 2021년 영국 런던, 맨체스터, 리버풀, 글래스고 지역 광고판에 설치되었고, 2023년에는 부산역 광장을 점유한다.
Yoko Ono (1933- ) has been creating art related to the sky ever since leaving Tokyo following World War II. She critically reflects on the sky; something that belongs to everyone and cannot be owned, no matter the political, social, economic, or military reasons.
A Hole To See The Sky Through (1971), proposes a new way for us to sense and experience the sky by asking us to view the sky through a small hole in a postcard. Painting To See The Skies (1961), which is composed of some short, written instructions, describes one of the various methods suggested by Ono for viewing the sky. This series of artworks enables us to perceive and imagine the world in a slightly different way, through a simple poetic philosophy rather than an academic one.
SKY TV (1966/2023), a closed circuit video sculpture, utilizes modern communication technology purely as a means to view the sky. The attempt to integrate the myriad elements of the sky aims to connect people worldwide, enabling everyone to gaze upon the sky and signifying the sky as a space that exists everywhere at all times, regardless of external forces.
I LOVE YOU EARTH (2023) is an artist campaign project. This message is both a song of love towards the Earth and poses questions regarding the relationship between humans and the planet. Adapted as a public art piece to commemorate Earth Day, it was installed in prominent billboard locations in Florida in 2017 and in London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Glasgow in 2021. In 2023, it occupies the square at Busan Station.
